Be prepared to pay more .....if you can find any at all...The recent rain and Irene has caused so much damage to the pumpkin crop and also to many of the corn mazes on the east end..
Some farmers are so in need of pumpkins to meet the upcoming Halloween demand due to their crop being completely damaged that they are having to resort to bringing pumpkins in from as far away as Canada to meet the expected demand....Pumpkins and corn mazes have become so very popular out east and many farmers must rely on the agri-tourism income to keep their year round farm opeartions going.
So if you have a favorite place out east that you go to every year my advice is to call them in advance to make sure they have some pumpkins and also to check their prices....
Many east end farmers have suffered terrible damage and losses from all the severe weather.
So thought I would give a heads-up so you won't be disappointed by not calling or emailing your favorite farm first before taking the ride out.
My retirement planner told me to open a vineyard, glad I did not listen to him. I just continue with my buy high/sell low method of investing, figure I will be broke by 60.
Only wanting to remind all of those who go out to the patch, beware the Deer Tick and Lyme disease.
Pumpkin patches are ripe with ticks this time of the year, picking a pumpkin at Stop & Shop may not be as traditional,
but its a helluva lot safer! Halloween is the time for Dracula to suck your blood, not a parasitic insect which will dampen
your holiday season, for many, many years to come.
Even if there's few pumpkins or they are costly, there is alot going on out east. Hay rides, apple picking, fresh fall veggies, fresh grilled corn in the husk, the best pies and jams and jellies, petting zoos, pony rides, well, you get the picture. Pumpkins aren't everything! Most of the farms have them trucked in anyways and none are on the vine. Not cost effective for them to grow them anymore. The vineyards have wine tasting, live music, there are fairs. Tons to do and see. Now I am gonna be real sorry for this post cuz the traffic is already horrendous out here on week ends and here I am inviting more!
Please...just stay in Nassau and go to Stop n Shop.
Its just a Pumpkin.
