It's not really a surprise--apart from the long long waits their menus look like they haven't been updated in 20 years. We used to go there for ice cream but a couple of family members were told not to eat dairy products and Friendly's doesn't have a single ice cream /sherbet/shake/dessert that's non-dairy.

When I waitressed breakfast shift we had to cook our own food AND wait tables. I worked 50-60 hours a week which is great when you're 20 but not exactly a work environment conducive to long-term employment
That's why I always tried to give the ladies (many older women) good tips in the Friendly's at the two malls. Some I had known for nearly twenty years.

That Friendly's has been an IHOP now for , oh maybe , the last 10 years.
You can read about it in the Port Jefferson Staion ...3rd World Dump thread.

Chapter 11 doesent necessarily mean the end of Friendly's. Multiple fast food chains have been in and out of Chapter 11 including Burger King and Arby's - both of which are still around.
Given the state of the economy I wouldent be surprised if the government forces their creditors to forgive the debt to avoid raising the unemployment rate further. The greedy bankers at Wells-Fargo and Goldman Sachs already have enough money, I think they can part with a few million to keep the economy going.

Go buy something from the High $5 menu. http://www.friendlys.com/menu/high-5/ (broken link)
Well worth it for a decent lunch -- burger with swiss and fries or Turkey supermelt club w/fries for $5.

This is sad to hear, since we used to go there when I was a kid in Massachusetts. At the time, there was really nothing like it. We used to get Big Beefs, Sizzled Ham with pineapple sandwiches, and Awful Awfuls. Of course the ice cream was good.
Now, I guess there is too much competition, or maybe they were badly managed.

I was in Riverhead late this afternoon and after seeing this thread the other day I stopped at the Riverhead Friendly's....
Not many in the dining area and first time I would call the place messy...looked like the floor wasn't swept the entire day but I also noticed how very few employees were there compared to normally...
I ordered an All American burger with cheese 2-go and it came with lettuce, tomatoe and fries for just that $5.00 deal....I would call it a very good deal due to their cheesburgers are consistently good IMO. And that you get fries, lettuce and slices of tomatoe makes a really good deal..total with tax $5.43
I also picked up 3 of the little sundaes they have including one I have never seen before...it was called
Ice Cream Cake Sundae....
Vanilla ice cream layered with chocolaty crunchies, chocolate ice cream, whipped topping & confetti..
It was yummy.
Even the guy who rang up my sundaes picked up that ice cream cake one and started looking at it...he then said to me "I've never seen this one before" and I told him that I haven't either..
Any of you ever see ice cream cake sundae one before? I also got a original fudge sundae and a Reese's peanut butter cup one....my boyfriend got the chessburger and the original and Reese's one and I kept for myself the ice cream cake one.....delicious.
