I came home from central VT last night. We didn't have the heat on in the house up there and we didn't need it on here on LI. The CAC is still on here.
No heat here. Seeing how it is OCtober, I guess I should light the boiler, and perform the joyous task of bleeding the radiators. And covering the wall air conditioners as well.
Usually on the sporatic cold days, I'll light a kerosene heater for a few hours.

Are those poor people who suffered so much damage in VT from Irene getting anywhere back to normal as of yet?

It really depends on the extent of the damage. Some people will be displaced for a very long time, some farms are wiped out completely. Some farmers are fighting to keep livestock fed and healthy. It's heartbreaking. A few local people I know have told me about others whose homes were washed away.
It has been just under 4 weeks since my last visit up there and one can see some repairs have commenced, more roads are opened, but a lot of damage still needs to be addressed.
Hope I can hold out too as I don't want to be the first one to have to put the heat on...
But last night around 11 PM I took our garbage container out to the curb for this mornings pick-up....and after coming back into the house I just let the screen door close but forgot to close the main door....
I go upstairs to get ready for bed and about 15 minutes later I feel it getting really chilly...enough so I go back downstairs and sure enough I neglected to close the main door and the air coming in through the screen was indeed chilly.....
I hope it stays nice until November so the kids trick or treating will have nice weather. Not to mention I hated when they would turn the clocks back right before Halloween....instead of waiting to give the kids more daylight...
