Disgusted With Greedy, Corrupt "Public Servants"
Took a road trip this weekend. Drove the family up to a popular apple orchard in the Hudson Valley. Many out of towners from the city and Long Island were there. Upon leaving the farm, the local fire department was conducting a road block with flashing lights and all the bells and whistles. Thinking that this was some kind of sobriety roadblock, I was shocked and dismayed to discover that they had their hand out and were asking for donations. Tying up traffic and creating a dangerous situation just so they can refill the pig trough by shaking down out of town visitors.
Between this nonsense, the million tolls you have to pay, and the proliferation of the red light camera scam boxes, driving off Long Island, let alone on Long Island, is becoming nearly impossible. When will the gov't leave us alone and quit harassing us on our only day off? As public employee union pension payouts become due as more baby boomers retire, this harassment is only going to get worse. I thought we had a constitutional right to travel unimpeded without the union gov't thugs stopping us and trying to put their hands in our pockets every step of the way.

Those were probably volunteers looking for their entertainment (ie beer) money.
If I were you...I would launch a campaign against those Girl Scouts that bother commuters coming off the train at night to buy those overpriced cookies. After all, we do pay a lot for our monthly ticket and shouldn't be harassed on our way home.

Girl Scouts are different. You can ignore them and blow them off. A government official "voluntarily" stopping people with flashing lights is not the same thing.

so what did you do? Did you donate or complain to them while you were stopped? Or did you wait until you could sign onto C-D?

I didn't say anything. I just stared at them with an exasperated look, rolled up the window and drove on.

This is quite a common practice in less populated areas then Long Island. I don't see anything wrong with it.

ahahaha; this was funny.
OP: When and if this happens; if it's for a good cause I don't have an issue donating. If it is something I don't care to contribute to; I don't.
Although I must admit, this has never happened while I'm apple/pumpkin picking. ahaha
