I always find these lists interesting because with those types of median incomes (towards the lower end of the list), these days, you would likely only afford a fixer-upper in most of these locations, if at all.

Mount Sinai comes in at 375 and Old Field doesn't even make the list?
Skewed much?

I figure either that or they combined all CDPs in 11733. Setauket/East Setauket doesn't come in until further down the list -- 400's.
Given this is a median, Old Field and Poquott -- with their relatively small populations of high earners (one billionaire and several million plus guys in addition to the high six figure crowd) -- must have been outliers which didn't significanely impact the median for 11733 collectively.

NY definetly has more finite towns/villages as Walter so often clarifies. Other areas have a broader reach which dilutes the overall average income. What I mean is the smaller the legal jurisdiction the greater the chance that most residents could be of the same income range.

In essence I believe that's what happened with Old Field. Old Field is an incorporated Village with a very small population -- 918 in 2010. Seeing as it shares the same zip with Setauket, it was lumped in with Setauket zip, I guess? 2010 Setauket-East Setauket CDP has a population of 15,477 and according to the OP's link, S-ES had a median income of $107+K.

What I don't understand is why the village of Otego, NY with a population of 1,193 made the overall list (ranked 6,816). Could it be that they only ranked areas with 1,000 or more?

A lot of these lists depends on population. If you put a lower limit on the population to 50000 ( hamlets/villages with population > 50000), then Levittown is the richest place in NY. Highest-income places in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In statistics, median != mean. Smaller sampling will tend to get skewed lower.
