Default Please tell me I'm not the only one (or: Praise be to Parents!)

So, I want to know if I'm in good company.

Mid 20s, college graduate (top of my class from a top liberal-arts college, but up to my neck in debt), with a job that I love but that doesn't pay well right now in lower Midtown (gotta love the nonprofit field), living on LI...with my mom.

In her house.

In the same room I grew up in.

Yes, she's a very generous woman...and with the prospect of me going to graduate school for my M.P.A. (part-time, of course) next September, I don't see myself being able to afford anything decent until I'm at least 30.

Living in the same room I grew up in.

I can rent out some poop-hole if I wanted to in Queens or the Bronx, but I choose to stay behind and live in a half-way decent neighborhood (and contribute to rent and utilities, of course).

With my mom.

I'm grateful to her, and there is no prospect whatsoever of her kicking me out...but what do I tell my boyfriend? "Shh, don't wake Mom"?

Ahh, to be young and struggling on Long Island...

Anyone else in a similar situation (or a parent whose child is in a similar situation) willing to fess up? How do you deal?

My only advice...respect your mom's rules and consider her feelings, no matter how old you are. It's her house, and remember...you are fortunate that she allows you still live there. So don't be 'doin' the nasty' upstairs while she's watching TV downstairs...go to his place...or get a hotel room.

There are lots of affordable places to live on Lon Island. The problem is people will say, "oh no. That area is not good." so if race doesn't matter to some then what is the issue? If its not race then your being an elitist snob practicing classism. Here is a list of affordable places where homes can be bought for less than the median home price in either Nassau or Suffolk.

Wyandanch
Brentwood
Central Islip
Freeport
North Bay Shore
Riverhead
Roosevelt
New Cassel
Uniondale
Hempstead
Mastic
Shirley
Mastic Beach
Deer Park
North Babylon
West Babylon
Coram
Selden
Centereach
Amityville
Copiague
North Bellport
East Patchogue
Medford
Farmingville
Elmont
Valley Stream
Patchogue
East Farmingdale
Lindenhurst
Huntington Station
Ridge
Gordon Heights

There are probably more places.

My guess is hes probably making 50-60k.

Wheres he going when 100k buys 3% of the available housing?

Taxes for many are almost 1k a month...even in the towns you listed.

So very very broken

He can rent something in many different areas of Brooklyn or Queens. I hear Bushwick is the place to go.

I hate to say this, but you choose to stay in a job that you love, but that doesn't pay well. In this day and age, you have to suck it up and hustle to make enough money to own a house.

You can't rent an apartment though? I'm not a college graduate, in fact, I have my GED, but I managed to make enough money to move out at 18. Drop the daily lattes, drop the expensive drinks every weekend, etc. and you might find it easier to make things work.

I grew up in Westchester... not a cheap area, probably comparable to Long Island, if not more expensive, and I was able to move out.

And I live in Lindenhurst, it's a nice town with affordable housing prices. I would not put it in the same list as Shirley, Mastic, Roosevelt, CI, Farmingville, Hempstead, nothing at ALL like those places.

I own a home. In Lindenhurst. Yet, I never felt an entitlement to have a home. I'm the first person in my family to be a homeowner, and it was through hard work.

I would LOVE to work at a non-profit with animals. It would be incredibly fulfilling for me. Instead, I work my corporate job so I can pay the bills. It's a trade-off that a lot of people my age (20's), don't want to accept.
