I'm still confused why the county pays for a Santa to sit at a privately owned store. Or did Suffolk buy the General Store?

The nice retired detective wouldn't do it for free, BTW.

.

If you read it again, at the bottom of the report it states:

Built in 1857, the St. James General Store is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was operated privately for decades until Suffolk took it over in 1990.

Thanks...my attention span is waning as I get older, especially for Newsday articles (where I originally read this).

Never fear -- a candidate for County Exec paid for it out of his own pocket.

He claims it wasn't politically motivated.

I personally know that Santa and he is a registered Conservative. He is taking a big time ribbing being bought out by a democrat. He is not like many think living on a big SCPD pension, lives in a very modest home and drives a 12 year old car. Good guy.

Call me Pollyanna but I miss the days when someone could do something nice and not have it have second guessed. Regardless of who did it, it was a nice GESTURE, I think. I live in Nassau lest anyone think I have a pony in this circus.

Even if Suffolk County now owns and operates the store, I'm equally confused as to why a gov't entity was using tax funds to pay for a Christian Santa Claus?
