Walking up from the train station down Wycoff St thru a residential area there were landscaping trucks parked in driveways and on lawns, and parties of guys getting drunk. Another young guy had his dirty lawn stained pants down to his knees. Once inside the mall it was noisy, kids running all over the place and hardly anyone spoke english. The food court was filthy and the stores were messy. Lots of cars with out of state plates in the parking lot, mostly North Carolina and Texas.
Walking back along Newbridge toward W.John there's piles of litter by the fence, lots of Coconut Juice bottles and Lotto Scratch Offs.
Alot of the activity seems to center around the small strip of stores on the SW Corner of W.John and Newbridge, there's a new bodega that opened up there and some more guys just getting drunk and loitering in the parking lot.
I have to say I hated walking through this area more than Post Ave!
A far cry from the town Billy Joel grew up in..thats for sure.
I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think it is much easier for an illegal alien to get his/her license and their cars registered in that state and/or other states other than NY.

As someone who has lived in both NY and NC, I can tell you it's about 1,000 times easier to get a license and car registration in NY. When we went to get our licenses after moving to NC last year about half the people who came in the door of the DMV were turned away because they didn't have the required documentation. You can't register a car in NC without an NC license. You can't get a license till said car is insured.

Hmmm... this thread reminds me of another memorable post. Even down to the out of state plates in the mall parking lot, LOL...

Does JIW have a schizo "upper middle class" housecat alter ego?

Actually Downtown Jamaica (around the LIRR) is becoming more Hispanic: There are actually more Hispanics than Blacks nowadays. I guess it's spillover from the neighborhoods to the west.

South Jamaica is still mostly Black though.

No, but Queens is closer to Manhattan than Nassau is.

cmon man, youre hallucinating if you really think this. There's actually some good parts in Hicksville (south). Long Island Medium much?
Isn't that often the case with a lot of suburban towns: The worst part is usually right by the train. Of course, how bad the area can vary (both in absolute terms and relative to the rest of the village).

Plus some mid-rise apartments. Don't fix up the mall (there's no need), just add a COSTCO and a Fairway/Aldi. Build around the mall instead of demolishing it.

The place has a lot of good infrastructure being wasted on sprawl.
Agreed. A lot of areas in Westchester and New Jersey are building real "Downtown" areas around their train stations, and it could definitely work in LI.

It might also have something to do with insurance being cheaper if it's registered in another state.

And even some blocks near the mall are not so bad.

But I do think you are right for pointing out there are some seedy areas because it also means that other parts of Hicksville are fine, including most of Hicksville south of Old Country Road.

I used to have the standard sterotype of Hicksville but as I been driving around the area lately, I been noticing there are quite a few nice blocks.

That is weird...Why do so many illegal aliens have out of state license plates then? I've seen many North and South Carolina plates.

I even knew a friend from HS who came here illegally from Mexico and his car had a NC plate. (true story)

Nah, I don't think thats the case at all, at least on LI. The worst part of any town is usually some other area, ie, unrelated to the train. What examples were you thinking of that match the scenario in Hicksville? Maybe Farmingdale (but then you have E. Farmingdale), Westbury, maybe Mineola. I really can't think of any others that stand out.

Maybe they are from MS-13 cells in the South ?

Of course it doesn't have to be that way. Towns that have gotten it right (such as Great Neck Plaza) have made walkable communities gearing to commuters. The train station should be a draw to commuters. Even Westbury has done more with trying to woo commuters near the train station with the new condos. (though there are way too many trains that skip Westbury...but that's another topic)
What's near the Hicksville train station? A bunch of half vacant office buildings, a lackluster mall, and streets full of flophouses? Lets not forget that check cashing store and bodega. There's no actual "downtown" area. There may have once been one along Broadway but now there's just more bodegas there. I think even Goldman Brothers closed shop.
The area needs a revitalization plan. They could turn the office buildings into condos, renovate the Broadway strip by closing the bodegas and bringing in more appealing stores, etc.
And of course close down those flophouses off W.John St.
But like many towns on Long Island, it is left to suffer. I believe it is because those running the town (in this case TOB) look the other way so those in wealthier areas like Syosset and Plainview have cheap labor for lawn cleanup.
It is always interesting to note that as areas got wealthy (such as Plainview and Syosset, or Miller Place and Mt.Sinai) that areas nearby decline, such as Hicksville and Port Jeff, as cheap illegal labor is steered into those towns.
I'm just so sick of seeing this happening to towns across Long Island. It really disgusts me when there's so much potential for improvement, killed by greedy folks who'd rather put another town down so they dont have to do their own lawn...
