http://mobile.newsday.com/inf/infomo...ed:i=1.3321497 Real nice. Sacrifice our hospitals and low earning county employees to pay other groups exorbitant salaries. Nassau County is being ravaged from the overspending on cops and other services. One of my friends from college is part of the 175 being slashed. She's probably going to lose her home and be forced to leave LI. She wasn't even making that much money...about 1/3rd of what the average $202,000.00 NCPD officers make. Thanks a lot Carver and the PBA for hogging all the county tax money and ruining our Island.

Keeping my fingers crossed your friend can land another job at a different hospital. At least we have a lot of health care facilities around. Sad this has to happen right before the holidays too.

They're laying off 175 employees - how'd you like to be a patient there?!

Hope she can get a job somewhere else.

That place is full of Indians imported from India for employees. I wonder if they're laying any of THEM off.

I hope your friend is able to find a new job quickly.

While I realize NCPD does pay overly well, I don't believe they are solely to blame.

The county run hospital treats prisoners, illegals, indigents, nonpaying/uninsured -- groups which leave the County left footing the bill -- how do they pay for it? Raising taxes. NCMC also treats Medicaid patients, Medicare patients -- programs which have seen substantial cuts. Losses from them have to be made up from somewhere, too.

Even if there were a reduction in NCPD officers, the hole created by the non paying or reduced benefit patients wouldn't be plugged.

You could'nt have said it better!
Not to mention insurance companies who pay a small fraction of the actaul bill from those who ARE insured. But yet, they post record breaking profits!

Aside from Health insurance, what exactly entails "other benefits"?

- No contribution, Free Health Insurance for life, as you mentioned
- 3-day work weeks
- 61 paid days off a year
- 5 paid "Blood days" - most people are happy with juice and a cookie
- education payments - even if no education is pursued
- no layoff provision - not sure if this is factored, probably not
- Pension
- Sick & holiday pay

I'm sure there's more I left out
....

That hospital's already a mess. I would not want to be a patient there today, let alone after these cuts.

Good points. But it's racist and inhumane to talk about stuff like that.
That's true too with the insurance companies shafting the county (taxpayers)... but it seems like everyone is sharing the burden EXCEPT the NCDP. They are at all still racking up record high salaries and pensions...even higher in 2011 than the chart indicates. Democrats are calling for higher taxes to protect their lucrative salaries. The PBA will not give a cent back.
