Do the local colleges host concerts anymore? In the 70's and 80's I was going to shows all the time at the colleges listed above - Mahavishnu, Springsteen, Zappa, Jerry, Brombeck. I have looked around the websites of the colleges but don't see any indication that they put on concerts. Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

Early on in my Stony Brook tenure, someone got their neck broken in the "pit" at the Fishbone concert.

After that, no major concerts to speak of. Lawsuits.

Saw bone at some place on Main St. in Farmingdale. They were an amazing band live. Funk, punk, rock - the musicianship in that band was amazing. Like Prince on speed.

For Stony Brook, your best bet is to check the schedule of the Staller Center for the Arts @ Stony Brook University.

Staller Center for the Arts

If you are looking for rock concerts - I have not seen or heard of any worth mentioning while here (last 10y). The days when the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin etc performed at SB are long gone. Multiple reasons, I guess.

For other cultural events, including classical music, ballet, poetry readings, avantgarde dance, media, films - I find the Staller Center quite good.
Yoko Ono just had an exhibit, Babe Neuwirth will be performing, Alan Alda is having a regular workshop etc...
The summer film festival is excellent - independent films and documentaries.

Salt N Pepa and Joan Jett were at Hofstra last month, but this was in honor of Hofstra's 75th anniversary. They don't have concerts like that any more at the local colleges.

SBU revived the Stony Brook Concert Series last year. I knew of one act, Bruno Mars. Everything else is geared toward the urban type sound. Chiddy Bang and Hoodie Allen played at SBU the other night.

The glory days of Zappa et.al., are long gone.

The Tilles Center at C.W. Post puts on many concerts during the year but I don't think they are what you have in mind. Calendar - Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. One "name(s)" I see from the old days is Judy Collins and Arlo Guthrie. Seating isn't bad. Our HS graduates from there.

I saw Living Colour at SB back in the day. Urban Dance Squad (?) opened and a fight broke out during their set. They stopped playing and the crowd was ok after that.

I remember the sound being awful being the gym and all...

I remember my older siblings going to see Zappa, etc. there when I was a kid.
