I'm looking to purchase a home in W. Hempstead. I dont know anything about Long Island to would like to live there. I saw a home I like on Colonial Road and am not sure if this is a good neighborhood. Can someone please tell me what they know or think of this area. Thank you

The Hamlet of West Hempstead has a different border than does the "West Hempstead, NY 11552" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "West Hempstead, NY 11552" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of West Hempstead): places that have a "West Hempstead, NY 11552" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of West Hempstead are in the Hamlet of Franklin Square, the Hamlet of Garden City South and the Hamlet of Lakeview.

However, Colonial Road is in Lakeview ("West Hempstead, NY 11552" mailing address).

Lakeview is one of those many villages and hamlets on long Island where none of the places in the community have the community name as part of their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Lakeview have a "West Hempstead, NY 11552" and "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address.

That is Lakeview with a West Hempstead address. You should be aware that Lakeview is predominately African American. Anything with a West Hempstead address that is south of the Southern State Parkway is Lakeview.
And I wouldn't say that Lakeview is a bad neighborhood, it gets a far worse reputation than it deserves from a lot of people from the surrounding areas due to it being a predominately black area. I find it to be a nice little middle class to working class neighborhood. Recently, there was a string of burglaries in the area but the teen responsible was caught. Other than that, Lakeview hasn't had any other large problems in the recent past. Lakeview falls into the Malverne School District which has a higher graduation rate and alright/decent academic performance (you could find a lot better on the island but you can also find a lot worse) but it again get's a worse rep than it deserves due to the school district's racial composition.
If you are still interested then I would keep driving around the community and see if it fits you. I would also recommend asking residents of the area how they feel about living there. You could also attend a community meeting. Find out everything you need to know.
Good luck

I don't really have anything to add about the area I don't know much about it. My Brother in law lives in W.Hempstead in a different area and likes it.
Either or, my comment to you. Don't buy a house just yet. if you're not from here, and haven't lived on LI, its a real crapshoot. areas have different personalities, School districts are very important and varied in our real estate market, being 2 blocks one way or the other can be the deciding factor in whether you're in a good district or bad one, even within the same town, and can decide whether your house is worth $400k vs 300K or less.
I guess my point is, rent for a little bit to decide where you want to live, then pursue it.

True.
Among other things, in addition to indicating in which city, village or hamlet an address is located, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.
