I hooked up an hd samsung box to my plasma. using he component cables, it works find. but then i use the hdmi cables, i get a temporary picture with a message that says "hdcp authorization failure. hdmi port is disabled"
can anyone tell me what im doing wrong?

You probably need to adjust HDMI settings in your remote. Call Cablevision tech support. 727-6300

HDCP is a copyright protection protocol that prevents a device in the middle from copying the data being transferred between two devices. Generally it is not an issue for an end-user but if there is an issue with software or hardware on either side, you will get something like what you are seeing.

i guess it doesnt recognize the tv because there is nothing in the middle. its just cable box to tv via the hdmi cable. this is the third cable ive used.

The box is bad, if you have other devices connected via hdmi to the tv.
Hdmi cables either work or they don't. They are digital so it's not like you can have a partially bad wire, like with coax or component.
