Tonight on my way to get dinner I was noticing some homes on my block with white paper bags along the curb with lights/candles in them. About 5 homes on my block had it. Then I went to main St and all along the sidewalk in front of all of the stores were those same bags all lit up. There were barricades and you could not park on the street. I was wondering if maybe they were having a Holiday tree lighting? Not sure because this is the first time in the 8 years I have lived here that I have seen this. The lit bags were very pretty though.

I am looking online to find out. So far no information, and what's strange is a few of the side streets near my house have these luminarias in front of their homes too, it's not just on Main St.

I was told this is happening in Brightwaters as well. I havent seen it in West Islip though. The person who mentioned this said that she believed it had something to do with cancer awareness or something like that.

The proceeds go towards making Islip clean and beautiful from what I read. The kits were $10.00 for 12 luminaires.

I was hoping those things wouldn't catch on up here. They were very trendy down South seven or eight years ago. IMHO, they look trashy.

Sounds like a great fundraiser which needs a little more publicity for next year.

I think they really look nice all lit up, It gave Main St. a real holiday feel. My husband thinks they are tacky so I guess we won't be participating next year LOL

Are they at least turning them off after the event?

You say it's nice now. Wait until every house on your block has lop-sided white "paper" bags all over their lawns. The really tacky ones aren't even paper. They look like white plastic lunch bags trimmed with pinking shears, and they start sinking into themselves and bend outward. After about a week, the lawn looks like the morning after a fraternity party.
