Default Lock your cars

Recently, I discovered my GPS missing along with a bag of change I keep in the glove box. I admit that sometimes I neglect to lock my car on the driveway, however I'm a stickler about locking in parking lots, so I know the theft was done on my property.

When I told a few friends about this, they ALL told me that this was done to them or someone they were related to (in all towns, high taxed towns as well). So, lock your cars, and consider motion lights and security cameras.

my wifes gps was taken right out of the car in the driveway about 6 months ago. I imagine these people know that cars are loaded with all types of gadgets (ipods, gps, phones) and they simply try door handles until someone leaves the car unlocked

never mind about locking cars that's a given, Novemeber 2010 my husband's tail gate was stolen right off of his pick up truck in our driveway. It was there when he woke up to leave for work at 7:45 am (he took my car that day) and when I went out at 10 am it was gone.

My XM radio was taken from my car in front of my house (door was unlocked) Thankfully no damage was done, and I got a replacement on ebay for less than $20. More of a hassle than anything. Stupid thing is once it was reported stolen, it's useless as a brick.

As heartless as this might sound, it's mainly your fault for leaving your car unlocked when there are items worth stealing in the car. Would you leave a pocketbook or breifcase just laying in the open at a gym if it had your Ipod, Laptop, etc in it? Or do you lock it in a locker? Do you leave your house unlocked while your gone?

Your car most likely has valuable items in it, and if you leave it unlocked, more than likely you'll have that stuff stolen.

If your car is locked you stand a better chance of keeping those items safe as thieves are less likely to break a window and risk an alarm going off. It still can happen, but it cuts your chances down.

Also, don't leave anything in plain sight. If you have a GPS, take it inside with you when you get out of the car. If that's not possible, put it in the glovebox. If it's in sight, it's like candy to a thief.

You're not heartless, you are totally correct. Sometimes I neglect to lock and arm the car because my kids take their time getting out and I run in to open the door to my house, thinking I'll lock it once they're out, but often I'd get distracted. You can bet that from now on that'll change!
The gps was an old tomtom one, not worth much. I'm glad they didn't find my EZ pass because I'm sure I didn't discover the missing items for some time, and you are responsible for EZ pass charges up until you report it missing.

I just can't get over the balls some people have.

Especially around the holidays, since some people keep presents in their trunks.

My friend lives in Islip by south of Montauk. A few days before Christmas she forgot to lock her car -- next moring the change in her cup holder was gone. She hadn't left anything else in the car.

I've forgotten to lock my car on several occasions, which is silly considering I have a remote lock.

A while ago, my mom forgot to lock her car. When we went out the next morning, all the compartments in the car were open, but nothing was missing. However, there was an unopened pack of d batteries in the trunk that she hadn't bought! Weird...
