we moved here in august and was absolutely gobsmacked at the brokers fee! we're navy - we've lived allllll over this country and never once did we have that 'fee' come up. it's an absolute crime!

In (most) other parts of the country (including upstate NY) the landlord pays the fee...

Same here, I refused to enable the practice myself. It took lots of patience but I finally found a decent by-owner place that didn't try to squeeze me for $3k or more up front.
