Intel Science Talent Search 2012 Semifinalists

Hats off to LI in the Intel STS--Another year of Long Island students coming through.
61 Semifinalists from LI, out of 300 total. Many of them hailing from the usual schools that dominate this competition; but I was especially impressed with Bellmore grabbing 4.

Not too many "Jones" and "Smiths" in that listing. Seems like a lot of children of recent immigrants.

Gee...wonder why

Don't worry, in a generation or 2 their kids will be just as lazy as you are.

You can go one step further and contemplate that most would be kids of skilled legal asian immigrants whose incomes are above average (and who make up like what 5-10% of the classroom ?)....

But you are looking at the wrong list.... this is what you would call the geek (nerd) list.... you should be looking for the Jones and Smiths on the extra curricular activities list, FYI most Jones and Smiths are not even trying to get on the Intel list, its harsh of you to expect them to dominate it.

I thought the Intel competition is an extra-curricular activity. You probably meant sports.

That was truly a great story about a very talented and hard working girl inspite of her families problems, very inspirational.

It's not too complicated they study, work hard putting in long hours and are rewarded. Also you won't find any of their parents paying off to beat the system, like those involved in the SAT test scandal.

Congrats to all of this years semifinalists! Great job!

High five to Casey Vieni of Plainedge -- Red Devil Pride!

Given all the complaining we do about taxes and teacher pay, his project, " Economics of Education: An Analysis of Long Island Public High Schools and Economic Efficiency," sounds like an interesting read.
