I'm in the Army and will be doing a 3 to 4yr tour @ Fort Totten starting Aug12. Married w/2 school age children but family will not be living with me full time due to wife's job in PA. My housing allowance will be $3,500month and I'd rather buy than rent. Would like to avoid the stairwell experience if possible but it's not a show stopper.
How close to Fort Totten are you hoping to be? I would recommend figuring out how far you are willing to live, and if any place on Long Island (Nassau/Suffolk) fits, search it on this forum and ask if you have any questions.
Or, give a distance or travel time you can tolerate, give more details about what you want in a community and maybe people can help you from there. Good luck!
There are a number of condos and coops in the bayside area right by Fort Totten. A friend lives in the BayBridge condos and she really likes it.
