It went from $125 then $150,then last year $200. I wouldn't trade in my CPA for anything plus we each have our Ira's with him. He's in East Islip. MY DH has been using him for about 15 years and me about 9 years before that I used my dad's accountant.
My cpa last year told me to do turbotax but not submit and then proved to me that $300 to him for for ours and our daughters was well worth it. We would've paid feds $4,500 and Andy Cuomo $503. He got it down to $3100 and $390. He signs it so his license is attached.
He probably lied.
Signing a return does nothing to protect you. He does not attach his license. The signature of the preparer just attests that he did not willfully commit fraud in preparing the return.
It does not relieve you of paying any taxes due should he have made an honest mistake.
Well I've used him for over 15 years and never an audit. I'll keep doing so. You're correct about license what I meant is if we get audited he holds some responsibility since he prepared taxes.

He is not offering you a "we will stand by you in an audit" thing by signing your return like H&R Block ... and let it be known that H&R's guarantee is that they will pay any penalties incurred if they made a mistake ... NOT any additional tax money you owe.
You know the reason he signs your return too (with, I believe his own SS or TI number)? Because the IRS set up the forms that way so that the tax preparers REPORT the income they receive for doing other people's taxes! That's the real reason he is required to sign your form.
PS: If you have not been audited in over 15 years that's a good thing!

Two things...
The chance of being audited in the NY area is rare. The IRS has limited resources and they are going to use them to recover the most taxes during audits. They are not going to come after a couple earning $100,000 on Long Island when they have their pick of millionaires in NY.
The IRS is not looking to track an accountants income by signature. They are looking to find those preparers who repeatedly make "errors" or take deductions that are either wrong or simply stretch the envelope.

He may hold some "professional" responsibility for preparing your taxes correctly but technically he has no responsibility to the IRS. It's YOUR return, not his. Normally a CPA will cover penalty and interest if its his mistake but he is not obligated to do that.
