What do you mean? . how hard can it be to get a handgun for your home only? It's not like your conceal carrying outside or anything of the sort!
Many threads here on how hard it is to get licensed in Nassau or Suffolk.
2nd amendment is mostly a myth in NY. Keep a shotgun for home safety, at least while they are still legal. Shoot an intruder with an illegal handgun in NY and you'll be in as much trouble as the criminal, maybe more if you only wound him and not kill him. He'll probably sue you and end up with your house. Anyway this is way off topic and is already discussed in dozens of threads.
the areas that look like Queens East have looked & felt like Queens East for a decade or two. Mangano came when?
Next you'll tell us there are no police patrols to be seen ANYWHERE and Bethpage is starting to look like a 3rd world country. Hmm, I wonder if that person started her plans to leave yet...
Be very careful reading the LI Press specifically "special report" articles. Read between the lines. See and google who they are quoting most often. It is very biased, pro union and socialist. I have called them out. They are a great example of do not always believe what you read. I believe that they have an agenda. Here is the article that states the 118% increase. http://www.longislandpress.com/2012/02/16/an-inside-look-the-nassau-police-precinct-debate/
Here the 118% quote. See page 5.
“A comparison of year-to-date crime statistics from the week ending Jan. 31, 2011 and the week ending Jan. 30, 2012 shows that all major crime reports in the county are up approximately 27 percent. Total burglaries are up approximately 71 percent. Residential burglaries rose by approximately 118 percent.”
Gee do you think there is bias reporting going on ?
Here is blog by its owner Jed Morey. Jed Morey Read a few articles of Jed's and you understand the agenda. Dorian Dale is babbling socialist that works for the Town of Babylon as it Energy Director.
Here is a portion of their mission statement. About "The Press serves to inform, educate and entertain the opinion leaders of Long Island with cutting edge, and at times, acerbic editorial." Nice words -- movement, community

Actually, the conflict of interest would be that she wrote for the press while serving as a government official, particularly as a Director of Communications and Public Affairs. Unless she's padding her LinkedIn info, that's a big no-no in journalism.
However, that aside, a freelance journalist is free to write for whomever he or she wants. If she were writing PBA newsletters and also reporting on police for Newsday, that would be a conflict, because she's taking money from people she reports on.
Police Magazine is published by a commercial for-profit entity. It's basically a for-profit trade magazine. That means she's not taking money from a police department or police union, but from whoever the publishing company is. In fact, that publisher also puts out Campus Safety Magazine, Security Sales & Integration, and Government Fleet.
Therefore, her writing for the Long Island Press isn't a conflict. Police are her beat. That's what she covers. Doesn't matter for whom as long as the police department or the police unions aren't also paying her.
Speaking of her LI Press work, I wouldn't say this was biased in favor of police:

I haven't looked at the others. I just wanted to point out that you can't claim bias for Domash because she writes about the same topic for a trade magazine put out by an independent, for-profit publisher and for a local newspaper.
The increased number may be due to the dramatic increase in foreclosed homes. It's very common for vacant homes to be sought after by people for their copper pipes, copper wiring, fences and other materials. I strongly believe that this act is still classified as burglary.
What's the big deal. If you are a law abiding taxpayer just get a handgun for home defense. You pay big taxes on LI and live by the rules, take advantage of the 2nd Amendment and you're right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..and the ability to protect those rights via said Amendment!
I do not rely on police protecting my home. I do that myself. Years ago I spotted a person breaking into a car on my block, I called 911 then I went out to confront this person with a baseball bat, he pulled out a knife, when I kept on walking toward him he ran away. When the police came they were more concerned about me confronting the man with a bat then they were about the crime being committed or that he had a knife. I would do the same thing today except I will not call 911. Plan on protecting yourself.

That probably accounts for a lot of reports. When I was looking at houses we looked at a lot of vacant, foreclosed homes. Every one was broken into to and had the pipes stolen.
Also, every person should have a way to defend themselves if need be. Shotguns can be purchased very easily and sometimes under $200.

Your lucky it was a knife and not a gun I wouldn't think of bringing a baseball bat to a gun fight would be the smartest idea

A shotgun is useless during 99% of burglaries. A real burglar cases out a joint and knows your routine ( especially who many live at your residence and your work schedule). The last thing a burglar wants is a confrontation.
A shotgun might work in a home invasion style robbery but how often does that happen? and if it does there's a good chance your not getting to that weapon anyway. False sense of security, seen it many of times....
