Out of the 100's and 100's of burglary reports I have taken or investigated I have never had one that the home owner confronted a burglar with a shotgun.
Perhaps because you worked in NYC, where far fewer people own guns. The NRA and other groups routinely publish dozens if not hundreds of stories every month of successful defensive uses of firearms.

Most people that I know that have firearms in their homes... they're usually locked away, unloaded, or a gun lock attached. Most people are afraid that their children might find them and accidentally shoot themselves. Honestly how many people do you know sleep with a loaded shotgun in their bedroom?
It's not difficult to make a weapon both safe and usable in the event of an emergency. Having an alarm, locking your bedroom door, etc. will provide you with extra time to ready that weapon.

That weapon you think might save your life could be the one that causes your demise.
While certainly possible, if you're not an idiot, the odds are on your side.
IMO everyone, except for those who have psychiatric issues, should be required to learn how to safely and properly handle firearms.
Most cases of little kids shooting themselves could have been preventing by education and awareness. Kids by nature are curious so of course they are going to seek out those cool things they see on TV. Teaching them from a young age how to safely handle guns will reduce these incidents.
Not every kid is going to seek out guns just because they see them on TV.
If they even see them. Some parents don't feed their kids a media diet of violence in the first place. Not that you do, but come on: A five-year-old isn't going to know much about that stuff unless a parent isn't paying attention to what the kid views.
In Switzerland every home has a gun, or many guns. They are not paranoid, they are aware of why having a way to defend oneself is important. They also have an extremely low crime rate and waaayyyyyyy less firearms deaths than the US.

How many time have you heard of a burglar shot dead by the homeowner inside their home Like I said 99% of burgs are done during the day when the home owners are away.
But in those cases there is no need of self defense because there is no threat of harm. So then it doesn't matter. Of course you don't want to get burglarized when not home, but at least your not in danger.

I don't know. But if you're gun is locked in a safe, then yes, it's virtually useless in a home invasion.

Well, my toaster could be demise also in the rare event that it shorts out and starts a fire, but I'm keeping it anyway.
