Can you believe that they're considering building a park on Highland Avenue ? They really shouldn't bother installing slides , see-saws , and swings , just fill it with hammocks and tents instead. The Pax Christi rejects will have a place to spend the night without having to go very far.
The last time I went to the post office after hours , there was a bum in there lying on the floor sucking on a 24 oz. beer like a baby with a bottle.

A park would be great if we could keep them out of it. We used to have a problem at the local park with bums, but community members have been doing sort of a community watch thing. More members of the community need to get involved.
That bum @ the Post office must have had a credit card LOL

The big fence that was put up between the old Stables and parking lot seems to have forced them out of there. I still also see them every day in the LIRR parking lot on the south side of the tracks. So they have not disappeared by any means.

They're def. still frequenting the LIRR, although constables now hang there so it's gotten better.
I think that church has a soup kitchen on some nights... Must be drawing in the bums. And you're right, that fence has worked wonders. Have you also noticed a lot of SCPD in the area? I have. Community must be getting fed up!

SCPD has based a gang unit in PJ - this was fairly recently.
As for the soup kitchen -- St James RC Church in Setauket has one. I've seen a few vargrants come in, but they don't hang around -- despite the wooded area to the east of the church graveyard. A couple of years ago the SCPD chased one out of there. The family was aware that the man was doing this, he didn't want their help, though.

That's not the first time I've found a bum in there ! They linger outside and sneak in when someone exits. No credit card required.
They tend to hide when they're in there too , so that they can't be seen from outside.
We'll see how LOL you think it is when you go in and find yourself in there with some scary character.
Don't say I didn't warn ya'.

I have not noticed any increase in police in the area at all. I bet all the homeless are now hanging out in that burned out house at the corner of Union and Maple by the train parking lot. The whole property is surrounded by sheets of plywood so you cannot see anything from the road, but I am sure they found a way in there. That thing needs to be torn down already.

Believe it or not, the CDP on LI with the highest percentage of Dominicans is Freeport, at 12.9%, followed by Copiague at 12.4%, and Brentwood at 6.9%. North Bay Shore is 5.7% Dominican, and North Amityville is 5.6% Dominican.

Those statistics are very interesting.....is that info from the latest census? I thought Freeport was predominantly African-american, and I knew Copiague had a high Dominican population but I am very suprised to see that it's higher than both Brentwood and Bay Shore.
I was always under the impression that Brentwood/Bay Shore/ CI had the highest percentage of Dominicans/Central Americans on LI...

They do, don't always trust statistics. Numbers are always skewed.

Yeah, they're from the latest census.
Actually, Freeport is predominantly Hispanic, but only by a small margin (something like 45% Hispanic, 30% Black, 25% White). Hispanics are coming into a lot of areas on LI, so areas that used to be mostly Black are seeing more Hispanics coming in. It's been going on in Hempstead for a while, and you're seeing it more in areas like Uniondale, New Cassel, Wyandanch, North Bellport, and Gordon Heights, to varying degrees.
As far as Brentwood and North Bay Shore, both of those areas have very high Hispanic populations (I think both are close to 70%), but the thing is that a large percentage of them are Central American (I think 32% of Brentwood's population is Central American). So that's why Copiague and Freeport had higher Dominican populations: Because the background of the Hispanics who lived there is different.
It's like here in NYC (that's right AutoRacer9, us city folks have invaded the forum). You have Hispanic areas that are more Dominican, and ones that are more PR or Mexican.
But as ydsavaged said, the stats only tell so much. You could have people who just checked "Hispanic", but didn't fill out a specific nationality, and of course, you have people who, for one reason or another didn't fill out a census form. For instance, near my school, there was a large house that caught on fire, and it was illegally subdivided (somebody said there were 30 people living there, which sounds like an exaggeration to me), but in any case the point is that there could be families who are unaccounted for (e.g. One family fills it out in the hopes that the Census Bureau will leave them alone, and the other family isn't accounted for).
