The village is getting pretty dangerous with all the bars down there now, with a lot of gang activity, and the train station area, now that the bikers are gone, leaves a lot to be desired.

It's sad, because I used to frequent the Ihop there almost every Saturday morning with my friends, and I read it was recently robbed at gunpoint.

What do you feel the problem is? Since PJS has probably the third highest Dominican population in Suffolk (Brentwood and CI being first and second) along with Glen Cove in Nassau.

I am in no way racist and am not trying to blame Dominican ppl for the problem, but It seems like that a lot of people who are re-locating from the city areas like Queens and the Bronx are bringing some people of questionable motives.

In short yes. Not a racist thing just a true thing. What you like, or do not like about Brentwood and C.I., are very much similar to Brentwood.

PJS, never was a "garden spot of LI"

One trip to the Pathmark there tells you all you need to know.

Comsewogue is not a district that I would entertain.

Nor is Centereach, (Middle Country) Longwood or William Floyd.Or Farmingville and much of Sachem. This is what's affordable on LI.

There really are no middle class areas left on the Island. When we entered a position where Three Village was no longer affordable to us, we left.

Here in my part of PA, there is a 14 room home that was built in the 1920s maintained and upgraded, with all of the original features intact plus a gunite in ground pool, a cabana, maids quarters a library and 6 bedrooms.

Asking price? 259,000 In a beautiful community that reminds me of Garden City.

I love LI but it doesn't love me back.

I refuse two pay 2000 a month for a rental house in a seedy area.

Patchogue might have some middle class areas

I bet these undesirable school districts do as well as the school districts in your neck of the woods. I'm sorry, but long islanders worry way too much about school districts. While there are some that are bad, and dangerous, the 5 you listed are just fine. Glad you found a place you can call home. I love it here on long island.

Sure there are bad school districts here. But homes there cost 50 - 75 thousand!!!!
NOT 300 thousand!
As I said, I love Long Island, but it's become a "land of extremes" Very rich with fantastic schools and wildly expensive homes.
OR - Seedy, with mediocre to bad schools and expensive homes. They are expensive either way.
And places like Selden and Port Jeff Station seem to just get worse put home prices stay high.

Really where is the Long Island Middle Class? Many of us attempted to stay. But of my immediate family and my cousins, it looks as though the Long Island Middle Class is in Florida, South Carolina,Up state NY, North Carlina and PA.

And we all grew up comfortably in Oyster Bay, Huntington, Glen Cove, Locust Valley, Farmigdale, and Syosset. Now only our parents remain.

Different strokes for different folks, but I wouldn't call Port Jeff Station "seedy." I also wouldn't call Comsewogue a bad district. My kids are having a wonderful experience there, as did I, as did my father, etc. (You get the point).

All the high schools on Long Island are going through their issues as of late. I have friends who live over in Setauket and their kids go to Three Village SD. Ward Melville is having similar drug issues to the rest of the island. Even moreso, they're calling it "the pharmacy." Now, I know WM is a great school, my grandfather taught there for years and loved it... but he also sent his kids to Comsewogue. So what does that tell you?

There's a lot of parent involvement here. We have a lot of input into what happens at our schools and I like that.

WMHS was nicknamed 'The Pharmacy' back in the 1970's. This is nothing new, however the drug use is greatly exaggerated, as happens with all school districts.

One of the Comsewogue HS science teachers has sent/is sending her children throught TVCSD to graduate from WMHS -- it's all about what people can afford, and/or where they prefer to live. (She's north of 25A near the beach -- school districts aside -- I would prefer that to living off Boyle Rd.)

Out of curiosity: How long ago did your grandfather teach at WMHS? I wonder if any of my in-laws or husband had him. They attended from 69-83.

I would prefer 25A near the beach to living off Boyle Rd. too!

Gramps taught @ WM from the 60's (I think) until 94 or 95 I believe. He retired, then passed away shortly after.

Sorry to hear that

If you don't have the same last name as your grandfather (out of respect for your privacy, I wouldn't ask you for it if it was the same) would you DM it? I want to ask my husband -- he was in WMHS in the mid 70's.
