You know what... I will now listen not only to your advice on investing, but also to your advice on photography!
Thanks for the neat tips on light usage. Your photos are more convincing than other arguments - I am making the bee photo my desktop .

the proof is in the pudding as they say..
the important thing is to shoot in manual with any auto iso off. try 1/200 as a speed, 400 iso and f11-f/32 as starters.
leave the flash off and get the background just the darkeness you want it.
when the background is fairly dark and the flash the dominant source of light turn the flash on and take some test shots.
good luck.

Was this at the Camellia House? We just went to Planting Fields last month to see the poinsettia display.

the butterfly was exposed just the way i explained above so i can get the background fairly dark and freeze the butterfly.
i then used a software filter from nik software called glamour glow to create that erie glow to things.
i just love postprocessing and the things you can create from the same boring photographs everyone takes of the same things.
i dont care if i portray things as they look, natural doesnt always make good interesting looking photos . i like to experiment alot with different effects and software.
