Short answer is Fire Island and Provincetown, MA gay scenes (of course, "scene", not the whole place), began in the late 1940's. Post war fun and prosperity. Prominent gay artists and businessmen getting far enough away to get their freak on at the beach away from prying eyes. Slowed down in the cold war/McArthy era...then spiked like crazy in the sex crazed 70's, then slowed again due to Aids epidemic. Now it's all mainstream. party on.
I have some questions and want to know. If it is fire island than it is different from long island and it is all in suffolk county, ny? You go in about in sayville there to go to it across water? If it is all for gays than who the other people go and do they go with familys and children there? Why do they go and what happens there? It is a place like sayville?
Some say there is a vortex that opens up in the Great South Bay. It is responsible for the many many disappearances in Suffolk County ny. Many witches have been known to live on Fire Island. They go there to do these things and they are people that do it?
