I had never heard of it either. But it's way at the bottom of the list. No surprises there - lots of Florida on there!

I used to drive through new cassel when we went to the broadway mall in hicksville. I am not sure exactly where the westbury border ends and new cassel begins. I had my guesses but basically off post ave, right where the train station is, you could make a right and it used take quick shortcut around the back when we were around old country rd and wanted to go to broadway mall. In high school, i didnt see the need to use the parkway all that much but it would prob have been quicker. All high school kids seemed to do was drive around now that i think about it. This was my only experience with the town. This was about 10 years ago, but the hispanic population was pretty large. THen as you got closer to the mall before going over the parkway, onto west john st. by cantiague park, it was mainly an african american community. I would have never known the area was there if I didnt decide to take a different route. Interesting list.

Nancy, the reason that you might have never heard of New Cassel is because New Cassel is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address.

The pertinent geography:

New Cassel is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the extreme southeast section of the Town of North Hempstead, in the central part of Nassau County, where the Town of North Hempstead converges with the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of Hempstead. There are 30 villages (municipal corporations) and 17 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of North Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Westbury, Town of North Hempstead and the Hamlet of Jericho, Town of Oyster Bay (the North Hempstead/Oyster Bay Town line); on the east by the Hamlet of Hicksville, Town of Oyster Bay (the North Hempstead/Oyster Bay Town line); on the south by the Hamlet of Salisbury, Town of Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead Town line); and, on the west by the Village of Westbury.

And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Hamlet of New Cassel has a different border than does the postal zone that services its area. In this case, there is no "New Cassel, NY" postal zone.

.................................................a cres
.....Hamlet of New Cassel..............956
.....New Cassel, NY ?????............none

All places within the Hamlet of New Cassel are in the "Westbury, NY 11590" postal zone.

Quickly eyeballing the map overlay of the "11590" postal zip code versus village and hamlet borders, all or parts of the following 7 communities are within the borders of the Westbury postal zone and hence all or some of the places in these communities have a "Westbury, NY" mailing address:

......Hamlet of Jericho, Town of Oyster Bay
......Hamlet of Hicksville, Town of Oyster Bay
......Hamlet of Carle Place, Town of North Hempstead
......Village of Westbury, Town of North Hempstead
......Hamlet of New Cassel, Town of North Hempstead
......Hamlet of Salisbury, Town of Hempstead
......Hamlet of East Garden City, Town of Hempstead
......Hamlet of East Meadow, Town of Hempstead

For those who have downloaded their copy of the 2006 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey report from the Long Island Power Authority web site, you'll find the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 6 (map) and 7 (population estimate).

Westbury Legend is on a distinguished road
It's not only the extremely larege Hispanic population here, but there are a lot of Caribbean born people who live in New Cassel. The Haitian population is very large and there is a good size Jamaican population here also.
