I've worked for a couple of the biggest: Arrow Elec and Symbol - now Motorola....
- Arrow was a great place to work, and if they still have a sabatical program may be worth looking into. But they moved many jobs off the Island, as well. Some say it is not run the same way anymore.
- Motorola - If you are involved in Development of new product design, this is a great place to be. Any other job though, (IT, HR, Finance, Sales, or general management) and it is slowly going to go away from L.I.
- I have NEVER heard good things about working for CA
DH is in healthcare and the only hospital he wants to work for the Northshore-LIJ system. He's worked at others and said they don't even come close to Northshore

- Try MSC, HenrySchein, Natures Bounty, Del labs
I think Del Labs moved most of their operations to the Carolinas.
I used to run BOD and Total Phenolics on their wastewater. Whatever generates that wastewater is now in NC.
No NC listing on the site, so it must be ops. Looked at open positions, all manufacturing down there. Sales, marketing, ops, admin all up here still.
Del Labs moved 90% of its Uniondale ops down south over the summer. I have been working with a lot of their outplaced admin and professional staff. I saw the CA comment above about never hearing a good thing about them...I left on very good terms after a pretty long tenure. No company is perfect, is seems that CA just seems to really strike a chord with their ex-employees. I heard some rough things about Symbol and working for the eccentric inventor/founder, but with the Motorola acquisition it is all pretty stale. As for LIRR/MTA jobs, good luck somehow getting through the process and the tests. Lots of trap doors to getting an LIRR job.
We live in a De-Developed Nation. I am not without hope, but it sure is depressing.
I wonder if it's occurred to anyone that umpteen electronic gadgets, doodads, and whoozies are subject to even more hidden quality problems than dog food, and that it might not be the greatest idea to buy all of that stuff from a world power that's an adversary.
