Not necessarily so. That wide swath of area falls primarily within 3 school districts. (The only curve ball would be if they are looking at a PJS home in Comsewogue schools.)
Three Village school district (small part Head of the Harbor, Stony Brook, Setaukets, Old Field, Poquott, and a small part of Port Jefferson) has a K-6 elementary, 7-9 junior high, and 10-12 senior high -- there are only a handful of school districts in NYS which still have this configuration.
Nissequogue and most of Head of the Harbor are Smithtown school district. Along with Port Jefferson schools, they have the middle school configuration.
All three districts are considered good performers. Two are large -- Smithtown being the largest while Port Jefferson is very small. Families I know in all three districts are happy in general. The only ones who don't have children in public schools are those who are ridiculously affluent, who have a preference for a parochial school, or who have children who are a handful so they send them off.
