Today's Newsday talks about a proposal for a new ferry service from Sag Harbor to Greenport. The track goes around Shelter Island and up to Greenport.
The only thing that would make it better is if it went around Orient and made a stop at Rocky Point first...then everyone could enjoy the magnificent views of Long Island's most prized hamlet.
"Sag Harbor's village board has cracked open the door to creating the first new ferry service in Suffolk County in decades -- a water taxi that would run between the South Fork village and Greenport on the North Fork."

During the summer months alot of people were going from greenport to shelter island and then shelter island to north sea to avoid the south fork traffic. I don't see it as much of a change to what they were already doing. They were already going from both forks to shelter island. This would just be going straight through. Not that big of a deal.
shelter island will freak out if the traffic is taken off their roads. I'm sure shelter islands local economy is dependant on some of that traffic in order for local businesses to survive.
Actually quite the opposite. Shelter Islanders will be very happy without that traffic. You can get across the island, ferry to ferry, in about six minutes, no need to stop for anything anyway.

+1.
Shelter Island is quite happy without the added traffic. That's why there is such a huge resistance to putting a bridge through.
The only people that are going to "freak out" are the North Ferry Company and South Ferry Company.
