I've always been curious, what do people who live on the forks all year round do for a living?? I can't imagine they are commuting to the city 5 days a week and it's not like it's dirt cheap to live out there so what do they do for an income. Are most people small business owners, work for their local town, doctors/teachers in the area, etc.? Living out there has always interested me and I just wanted to know what people who live out there do for a living.

That's kind of what I figured. Doesn't seem like there is much big business out there but it makes good sense why. What about people who live a little further west of the forks (Riverhead, Calverton, Shoreham, Moriches, Rocky Point)?? Those also seem too far to be commuting into the city or the western parts of Nassau as well.

Most of our neighbors in paradise (SB and RP) work locally (within 10 miles I guess??) on average the furthest is Western Nassau/Queens. I do know 2 people who commute to Manhattan each day. They hate life in general.

You make it sound like they are aliens from another planet. They drive to work like everybody else does. Jeez. There are plenty of jobs in eastern/central suffolk. Ever been to Ronkonkoma? or any of the vets highway corridor? and Moriches and Rocky Point are considered far? lol.

I used to live in Manorville and honestly I miss being far away from all you bubbled clueless people.

and how is Riverhead different then any other sacred place of western long Island? it is more built up than most of the country. I'll never understand this fear/curiosity of the east end that people have, like its some far far away place.

Long Island wine is about a $70 million industry. Most of the people I know who live out on the north fork are either involved with a vineyard, artists, writers, or local business owners.

That is pretty brutal..like 60 miles? My father did South Shirley (near the beach) to Queens village for 28 years - that was about 55+ miles.

went to the city (UWS) to pick up some furniture from a friend, and the very kind doorman told us he lives in Shirley and commutes into Manhattan everyday for the past 30 years. He is close to retirement and greatly looks forward to it.
