Hey Lubby....do you save money in the end doing this? I find that Stop and shop is pretty pricey for groceries. BUT if you save enough in gas it might be worth it. Do you find the gas savings to be significant? Thanks!

It's not for income taxes and it's not a money grab.
Visa/MC processing companies typically charge 2-3% + a small fee for every purchase. AMEX/Discover charge up to 5%.
How would you feel if someone took 2-5% of your income away?
That being said I personally much prefer using my debit/credit card, it's all about the points and cash back.
To the person who made a comment about everyone being in debt, you realize the vast majority of AMEX cards, OP has an AMEX, are NOT credit cards?
It's America, if you don't like what a vendor is selling pick another vendor. Ask your local gas station to put a $0 fee ATM on site, one of my favorite restaurants doesn't except credit/debt but they have a free ATM on site.

Really? I didn't know that. Thanks.
Getting back to the topic, Valero also charges more for using credit. I agree that it's a shady practice. I prefer using a card because I don't want to have to go inside the store and stand in line while people are buying their chips and coffee.

I stopped taking credit cards, quote a price to a customer and then they take out a discover card which depending on the purchase amount can be more than 5%...Amex is no better, visa and mc aren't nearly as bad, but they all get in on my work that THEY aren't doing, so now cc's are out
The CC takes money from you, then me to run it and then me again on the amount.
Though i understand the wasting time walking inside to pay the cashier that is not near the pump, and the bs that causes because people are so F'ed up they can't get gas pull out of the way and then go back inside and waste time looking for crap. . . .

Cost of doing business.
If you don't wanna deal with CC vendor fees then obviously you're free to charge more to make up for it, but likewise I'm free to not patronize your business when there are plenty of others who don't engage in this practice.

I'm not lubby but would like to comment...
I agree with your statement about Stop and Shop, although my daughters wouldn't; I guess it depends on what your buying habits are.
And unless I'm mistaken, the "cents off" program is only for Shell gasoline, and I find them high to begin with. It would take me forever to get 60 cents off (don't consume all that much by myself ).

to tell you the truth i wish we could charge more for credit card use for the employee time it takes to run cards, extra steps batching out and the percentage we have to pay.
it really slows things down when people use credit cards. we have to then deal with credit cards not being approved further costing more time.

I am far from a coupon cutter but our Stop and Shop bill runs about $200 a week. That means 80 cents a month is accumulated on our card towards money off at a Shell pump. Last week I got 82 cents off each gallon of gas. My car took 14.2 gls and I saved over $11. Even this dope can't turn that down.

I save on gas yes. Like I said one time I saved 60 cents off a gallon and another time it was 70 cents. I let my points add up. I have 686 gas points now. One time I did a fill up I ended up paying $3.15 a gallon for gas at shell, I do not remember what the gas price was without the discount. I don't find that stop in shop is that pricey, and i always try and buy sale items. Last week I save $22.00 on my grocery bill. It's 5 minutes from my house and I think the quality is better so that's why I go there and also for the gas points. The 2 pathmark stores near me look run down and dirty IMO so I stopped going there years ago and I find that king kullen is no bargain.

For everyone that doesn't know the stop and shop / shell...
for every 100 points you get .10 off a gallon, 100 points are from $100.00 spent....
Now Shell is easily .30 more a gallon and better than everyone else....
You can save that much gas learning how to drive. . . . . keeping the car at speed, not fumbling around with the phone, driving, not getting off and on the gas, staying in the correct lane for what your doing....driving, and oh driving the car the time you are in the car. . . .
