Were the X's painted near the railroad tracks?

Have a wonderful day!
The map clearly says Northport:

I think the LIRR rarely makes mistakes. They do know where their train stations are located.

With a little help from Google, oftentimes white Xs are used in surveying for aerial photography.

The X provides a point of reference in the aerial photo that can be correlated to actual ground measurements and that way the aerial photo can be calibrated so that it is more accurate.

Not all the time.

The Great Neck station is actually in Great Neck Plaza.

or do they? the train station sign up the road from my parents house in Shirley reads "Mastic-Shirley"

when it is in fact located in Shirley. Any thoughts? is the LIRR confused as to where this station is located??

Well, I rented a jackhammer and did not find any buried treasure, though the anvil fell on the compressor so I guess I'm SOL on my deposit.

The markings in question are approx 12" x 12" , pretty small, in a completely residential area. No boxes to block, no LIRR nearby, nothing but houses and a golf course. Thought maybe my wish of a 4 way stop sign was coming true.
I guess its possible they could be used for aerial distance calibration and are in center of intersection for clarity.
