I grew up in Huntington, there is a decent sized Jewish population. The West Neck section in particular seems to have a heavy concentration ... when I was looking at houses there in the 1990s it seemed every house had a picture of the kids Bar Mitzvahs. That's a beautiful part of the town and close the VILLAGE or "downtown area".

Unless you are orthodox, avoid the 5 Towns area.

The 5 Towns is definitely good for Orthodox Jewish communities, especially Cedarhurst and Lawrence. Woodmere and Hewlett are good too, but not as heavily populated by Orthodox, and forget about Inwood.

In Huntington Village or in immediate proximity to (i.e., immediately adjoining) Huntington Village are the following synagogues:
Huntington Jewish Center
www.hjcny.org
510 Park Avenue
Huntington, NY 11743 <== CONSERVATIVE SYNAGOGUE LOCATED IN THE VILLAGE ITSELF
(631) 427-1089
Kehillath Shalom Synagogue
Kehillath Shalom Community of Peace
58 Goose Hill Road
Cold Spring Harbor, NY <== RECONSTRUCTIONIST SYNAGOGUE LOCATED IN A NEARBY ADJOINING HAMLET TO HUNTINGTON VILLAGE
(631) 367-4589
Temple Beth El of Huntington
Temple Beth El of Huntington, Huntington, NY - Home
660 Park Ave.
Huntington, New York 11743 <== REFORM SYNAGOGUE LOCATED IN THE VILLAGE ITSELF
(631) 421-5835
For any jurisdiction on Long Island (town, village, hamlet, city), just type in GOOGLE "synagogues near _____________" (but without the quote marks), such as: synagogues near Huntington, NY
synagogues near Huntington Village, NY
synagogues near Melville, NY
synagogues near Plainview, NY
synagogues near Bay Shore, NY
etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
Then look up those locations in GOOGLE MAPS (using their Map View, Satellite View, and Street View) and in BING MAPS (especially using their 45-degree-angled Bird's Eye View).
And explore each of the synagogue's websites to deem if they are Orthdox, Conservative, Reform, or Reconstructionist (or, if need be, phone them).
For that matter, you can also type "Jewish organizations near ____________" (but without the quote marks) and it comes up with much useful listings besides just synagogues, such as: Jewish organizations near Huntington, NY
Jewish organizations near Huntington Village, NY
Jewish organizations near Melville, NY
Jewish organizations near Plainview, NY
Jewish organizations near Bay Shore, NY
etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

If you are reform and want good schools and a really nice Temple with a wonderful Rabbi, I would suggest Stony Brook - Setauket - East Setauket.
The Three Village SD is excellent, and Temple Isaiah is wonderful.
I think there are about five or six Temples and Synagogues of various types, as well as a university, a hospital and many historic and educational opportunities. The university hosts many cultural events, that to me, give the region a different flavor than other suburbs.
Huntington Village is very nice and I'm a fan! The schools are OK. My sister's kid's attended their. They are good compared to most.
There is a nice night life in the Village, and The Cinema Art Center, hosts a variety of foreign, independent, and documentary films, including those of Jewish interest.
Neither area is exclusively Jewish but there is a strong Jewish presence in both.
Oh for the record, I'm not Jewish, but my husband is. The Rabbi at Temple Isaiah in Stony Brook is one of the finest people I have met in my life, and one of the most down to earth, yet spiritual and smart clergy person I have met in my life.
Best of luck!
