Hey Newbie here.

We just bought in Manhasset and are looking at Homeowners Insurance. Anyone have any thoughts with the best company to go with?

Amica and USAA Group (only available to members of the military) are consistently rated the highest by Consumer Reports. I have read time and time again to avoid the well-known names in insurance at all costs.

use a good ins. broker & they will do all the search for you. Then just make sure the insurance company are highly rated

We are long time USAA members but when we bought our house they absolutely refused to write a homeowners policy for anywhere on the island. Because of this, we ended up switching our auto out of USAA as well... unfortunate, as I really like using them when I can. Have you heard of them insuring homes on LI recently? Has their policy changed?

My wife is the insurance expert as she does property and casualty as her business. She was a former broker with Aon and Marsh. I have always had USAA for property and auto. When we moved from Huntington to Greenlawn the rates went from a moderate level to an adjusted level coming this Summer of over $3000 a year. They were going off of replacement value and since the house had a lot of high end material are cranking it up. She put them in comp with Allstate who is coming in significantly lower saying a local agent knows the market and replacement value better. So now I question this guy because I am wondering how can an extremely highly rated company be off by that much? Plus i don't want to switch to find out after 1 auto accident we are dropped.
