This is what a landscaper buddy of mine told me to do:

1-Crabgrass control with Feed late Apr
2-Weed & Feed. Late May
3-insect Control with Feed late June/July
4-Turf Builder early sept
5-Winterizer Oct-Nov
How long have you been doing this? I'm surprised it hasn't burned your lawn with those short periods between treatments.

I am a new homeowner and put down the 1st step (Scotts/Halts) last month. I remember it says on the bag to not apply anything fertalizer or seed for FOUR months?

rh71's schedule is pretty much what I do every year and my lawn looks great. Only difference is I dont use weed and feed, just straight turf builder. Instead I go over my lawn after mowing and spray any developing weeds with Ortho Weed-B-Gone.

Here is what I follow (and I have never had an issue)

April - Starter fertilizer (or step 1)
May - Regular turf builder
Late June - Liquid Turf Builder
Sept - Regular Turf Builder
Mid Oct - Winterguard

You dont have to worry about granuals burning your lawn until you are looking at 90 plus temps. Which is why i use liquid fertilizer in the summer.

to the OP. Are the bright yellow patches there after the last mow (since the lawn had grown very tall)? If you're lawn is tall, and you cut down more than say 1/3 the height, you're removing much of the green leaf of the blade and left with the yellow "stalk" for lack of a better word. So, the yellow patches can be from the aggressive mow on an overgrown lawn. Especially common if the ground is uneven in spots, so some patches get scalped more than others.

I took a look tonight. That seems to be what may have happened. The grass was very tall and the ground is a little uneven. The worst areas very uneven. So as long as it grows back in green we will be fine.
