Thanks, Nymom; we have no children so I'm not concerned about the schools. Any idea what ethnicity is in Selden? I was wondering about the history of the town, income, etc.

I don't really know about ethnicity in Selden. I don't think it's exclusively one race but I couldn't give you percentages. What does this website say about it?

Selden is 2% Black, 8% Hispanic and 2% Asian. The rest is white and the most prevalent ethnicity is Italian.

Thanks, NYMom and dullnboring for your help. That pretty much summarizes what I could find out about Selden. Hopefully its far enough away from Smithtown to not have a problem. I really appreciate your help. Thanks again.

KIngs park is mostly white & christian. My boss is jewish, he lives there with his catholic wife & he says he's the only Jew around for miles. Huntington has beautiful affluent areas & pockets of poverty of gang violence.
Selden is very close to Port jefferson which is a tourist type village very similar to huntington. You would probably feel very at home in Selden, Centereach or even Middle Island. M.I. is rural, pretty & diverse. North Coram is nice too, stay away from Gordon Heights.
I live on the Wading River border a bit east of Middle Island, It is very wooded & rural here.
Do you need to commute to NYC? because its quite a trip from this part of Suffolk.
Long Island is a nice place to live, unfortunately its also very expensive, but I think most of Suffolk is accepting of racial diversity.
Good luck in your search!

Thanks, boomvang, momix5 and Kelly for all your suggestions. I guess I like Kings Park because it is so pretty, not knowing anything about it. Centereach has a great library, and it looks pretty nice. I've never been to MI or Coram. We don't have to commute to NYC, so the distance doesn't really matter.

I hear a lot of things about Suffolk county being so segregated, and resistant that I am suprised, although I shouldn't be. This is NY and I always thought that stuff was over with here. It's very saddening.

I am a recent transplant to NC from Huntington.
Huntington Township is huge- there are 7 school districts in it, I believe. Plus you have villages & town & county line issues going back hundreds of years, plus racist & classist gerrymandering of district lines which result in a crqazy quilt of school districts. Her eis my very quick summary:
Cold Spring Harbor SD (CSH & parts of Laurel Hollow in Nassau County) S. Huntington SD(Huntington Station), Huntington SD (Huntington & Huntington Station) Elwood SD for Elwood, Northport-East Northport SD Northport East Northport areas, Commack SD (East Northport & part of Commack which is in Smithtown)

Confused yet?
This is why the demographic stuff you get is all over the place. Cold Spring Harbor is very wealthy and mostly white. Huntington Village? Ditto. Huntington Station? Very diverse. AA and lots of Hispanic people. East Northport is middle class & mostly white, Elwood, is mostly white with pockets of AA, same for Greenlawn. Dix Hills is upscale & very international, Indian, muslim, Eauropean, most whites there are Jewish with a few Italians & others sprinkled in. Some AA's, but I have AA friends in that district whose son has been discriminated against by teachers. They are fed up & are moving to Virginia.
Huntington Village is in the Huntington school district, which does take in some of Huntington Station. Many parents send their kids to private schools like East Woods & St. Patricks which leads to noticeable segregation.
So, you need to visit, and then research by school district. You also need to walk the towns. There are very few AA's walking around Commack, Northport or Cold Spring Harbor. Huntington Village is a little better.

The neighborhood you choose makes a huge difference when schools are not county wide, or even townwide, even if you do not have kids in the school system!

I hate to say this but I was one of the people giving the dirty looks and being rude. I hated to see interacial couples because part of me always feels like the Black person is suffering from a slave mentality or is subconsciously saying they don't love themselves or just don't appreciate the beauty of being Black but after reading this thread, I am struck by the fact that you two just want to be left alone.
That, more than any afterschool special type hard-hitting morality is enough to make me just want you to find peace and to mind my business when I see other interacial couples...
