2/3 of city workers laid off yesterday. NY no longer can hide from the crisis the country is in.

it was only a matter of time. Can't give out cushy jobs with fat pensions to your friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. forever....

You don't need a news source. Take it from my family who is personally affected. Dad laid off yesterday after 15 years along with many others. Two thirds to be exact. Everything gone in a heartbeat. Medical being the number one concern.

It is mentioned in LB Patch.

The city has been a pit of patronage for a long time. Apparently, and what a surprise this is, a big part of the budget issue is wildly overcompensated cops.

On LI?

Yes cops, not Parks Department workers. 1 cops salary can employ 4 of them.

Bingo! $150k avg police salary. Dump two higher ups who shine a chair with their behind and you save 20 of the positions let go. Add the CSEA members who wouldn't pay an extra nickel for health care and wouldn't retire. Love those "every person for themselves" unions. Maybe they need a dictionary to look up what "unity" means.

Do you actually expect the Lieutenant to cancel the delivery on his 2nd jet ski to save some other poor slobs job?

As somebody who has always worked in the private sector, I still can't help but to feel bad for the people who were laid off. These are real people, with real families, and real bills. It had to be done, but the lack of empathy in some of the posts is quite discouraging.

I think the majority of the posts, except for one, sympathize with the people losing their jobs and simply point out that the people really taking the taxpayer to the cleaners aren't being hurt one iota.
