Default Island tree schools stinks

I have three children with special needs my oldest has bipolar adhd disorder, my second has a processing delay and my younger son is in self contained. while we were in Island trees schools it was a nightmare. They didn't believe my son had adhd they thought he was all behavioral. His fifth grade teacher destroyed his self esteem she asked him why he bothered to go to school and she said she was going to make his life miserable. I handled that situation. Everything they did to him was terrible. My daughter who I thought was doing fine wasn't at my last cse meeting with the school they told me she is on grade level know and we feel she can go into inclusion. When we moved to our new district which is Lindenhurst they tested her she was so behind it was disgraceful. She was at a second grade level and in fifth grade. Island trees has some nerve telling me she was at grade level. Lindenhurst took care of that situation and put her back in self contained were she is doing great and they have managed to get here caught up to almost grade level. My youngest son Island trees schools refused to give him a pre school program I got so frustrated at his meeting that i refused to sign any papers. That was when we moved our children to lindenhurst what a blessing it have been. When lindenhurst district saw my younger sons IEP and they tested him they asked me what happened. They couldn't believe how lacks Island Trees school district is. Lindenhurst school has done a wonderful job with my oldest son he is going to be attending a boces program were he will have small classes and access to counseling whenever he needs it during the day. I can not say enough about this wonderful district that helped save my children. Anyone who read this and has a special needs child stay far away from Island trees schools. I graduated from that school and in 30 years they haven't changed. They look at children with adhd, add, or any other neurobiological disorder like the kid is just lazy. They told my friends brother he would never go to college he proved them wrong he graduated top of his class. I am going to be seeking the advice of an attorney to see if we can sue Island trees on behalf of our children.

This is just disgraceful!!!!! You can put a complaint into the NYS Dept of Education as well. Once they see the blatant discrepancies between the testing at Island Trees and Lindenhurst hopefully they will investigate and stop this from happening to more children. Thank God you got out of there!!!! Good Job mommy for doing what you needed to do for your kids!

I can not say enough on how good lindenhurst is with special needs children. My youngest who is in kindergarten is in self contained. He has a very hard time focusing and retaining anything he learn. I spoke to his teacher and requested that he be retained. She called the department head and he left it up to her and the principal. Needless to say I am getting my wish he is being retained. Lindenhurst has been an answer to my prays.

Default This is why consolidation is necessary.

This is one reason why consolidation of school districts is necessary. All special needs students should have access to the best programs on Long Island.

There was a post not long ago about how Half Hollow Hills doesn't accept packets from out side their district. Half Hollow Hills supposedly has a great program, but only for its kids, that is wrong - especially when all districts on Long island get state aid and some federal aid. If you paid taxes that go to the federal and/or state government and then those monies are given to Half Hollow Hills you should have a right to send your kid to that school.

That originally was the purpose of the Boces program. Don't know how it got so individualized at each district lately.

First the way it was explained to me was that the law requires that students be educated with their non disabled peers as much as possible. In a Boces setting this is usually not the case since most of the students are significantly impaired. Then there is the cost factor. Tutitions at Boces went through the roof and then their is the tranportation cost to factor in as well.

I am in the same boat as you. Maybe you have been in one of my classes. I'm hoping to graduate from Dowling this summer. I am actually looking into working at DDI part time to get my foot in the door. I looking to get a dual major in Spec. Ed. and Early Intervention.

Can anyone recommend a good Special Ed lawyer. I can not deal any longer with the Manhasset Special Ed district. The insanity that goes on in this district is unbelievable. I was going to post many times but what goes on here is so bizarre I thought I would sound like a lunatic.

My child needs help and I can't do it alone anymore!
