Consultant and Advocate
I am the mother of 6 year old twin special needs children. My daughter is Autistic and Apraxic and her brother has ADD. Two years ago I started working as an advocate and consultant to parents of special needs kids because I found that I had so much success with my own kids and had gleaned so much knowledge that it would have been a shame to not share it with others. I have helped over 25 parents successfully get the best IEP for their children, both in Queens and in Nassau County.
This is not my day job, but a labor of love. I help parents who need assistance with finding the right schools, asking for services, attending meetings, etc. Although I charge for my services (since the time takes away from my marketing work), I am much much less expensive than a lawyer. And, I do a lot more!
As for school districts here are a couple I didn't see that I know are great for special needs kids: Herricks and Mineola.
Hope this helps...

I've heard great things about Herricks School District. However, I have a friend who is a Special Ed teacher that has two children of her own in the Mineola School District Special Ed program she said it is the worst.

This list is just a summary of opinions that other people who have had experience getting services wrote. If you go through the posts you will see the reasons why people had bad experiences. Also please remember the services in preschool are not provided (paid for) by the school district but by Suffolk County. The services you received somewhat easily while they are in Early Intervention or preschool is because it isn't coming out of the districts funds. Once you get to kindergarten it is a whole different story. I think the parents that posted have older children who are above kindergarten and that is where it gets harder. Pat Med has been having really tough budget issues lately and I am sure it is all related to that.

I am sorry about the info on Mineola. I was told by a mom with an autistic child that they had a good program. One great school district for kids with Autism I really know is great is Carle Place. I just attended a CPSE meeting for a child entering pre-school and they are providing excellent services for this child...more than I have seen anywhere else. They also have a good program for elementary school age kids woth autism.

Island Trees Stinks---i Disagree

They didn't believe my son had adhd they thought he was all behavioral. His fifth grade teacher destroyed his self esteem she asked him why he bothered to go to school and she said she was going to make his life miserable. I handled that situation. Everything they did to him was terrible. My daughter who I thought was doing fine wasn't at my last cse meeting with the school they told me she is on grade level know and we feel she can go into inclusion. When we moved to our new district which is Lindenhurst they tested her she was so behind it was disgraceful. She was at a second grade level and in fifth grade. Island trees has some nerve telling me she was at grade level. Lindenhurst took care of that situation and put her back in self contained were she is doing great and they have managed to get here caught up to almost grade level. My youngest son Island trees schools refused to give him a pre school program I got so frustrated at his meeting that i refused to sign any papers. That was when we moved our children to lindenhurst what a blessing it have been. When lindenhurst district saw my younger sons IEP and they tested him they asked me what happened. They couldn't believe how lacks Island Trees school district is. Lindenhurst school has done a wonderful job with my oldest son he is going to be attending a boces program were he will have small classes and access to counseling whenever he needs it during the day. I can not say enough about this wonderful district that helped save my children. Anyone who read this and has a special needs child stay far away from Island trees schools. I graduated from that school and in 30 years they haven't changed. They look at children with adhd, add, or any other neurobiological disorder like the kid is just lazy. They told my friends brother he would never go to college he proved them wrong he graduated top of his class. I am going to be seeking the advice of an attorney to see if we can sue Island trees on behalf of our children.

I WENT TO ISLAND TREES, ALL 4 OF US DID, SO DID MY MOM.. I STAYED IN ISLAND TREES BECAUSE I WANTED MY SONS TO GO TO ISLAND TREES SCHOOLS. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH THAT HAVE KIDS IN ISLAND TREES. MY OLDEST SON HAS SENSORY INTEGRATION DISORDER, MY YOUNGEST HAD PDD-NOS. I HAD NO PROBLEMS GETTING EVALUATIONS OR SERVICES FROM ISLAND TREES. I KNOW QUITE A FEW PEOPLE WHO CAME TO ISLAND TREES BECAUSE THE DISTRICT THEY WERE IN GAVE THEM A HARD TIME.. ONE WAS SYOSSET, LINDENHURST,LEVITTOWN,WANTAGH... MY HUSBAND IS A TEACHER, HE WORKED IN LINDENHURST. THAT IS THE LAST SCHOOL I WOULD EVER PUT MY KIDS IN... HE COACHES FOR MINEOLA. ANOTHER SCHOOL I WOULD NEVER SEND MY KIDS TO. BOTH OF MY SONS WENT TO VARIETY IN SYOSSET. MANY STAFF MEMBERS TOLD ME ISLAND TREES IS ONE OF THE BEST THEY DEAL WITH BECAUSE THEY GIVE THE SERVICES THE KIDS NEED & THE BUDGET ALWAYS PASSES. I HAD TO DEFEND ISLAND TREES.

Add Vclc To Great Programs For Special Needs
Add Variety Child Learning Center In Syosset For Early Intervention/autism. I Cannot Praise That School Or The Staff Enough!!! I Have A Son W/ Sensory Intergration Disorder & One W/ Pdd-nos. It Is Truly A Wonderful Program!! Anyone Going Through Ie Evaluations-request They Are Conducted By Variety.
Add Island Trees To The Good List For Special Ed Services. I Had Only Good Experiences With Them. And Continue To Get Whatever My Sons Need.
Boces May Have Been A Bad Experience. When I Asked If It Was An Option For My Son, I Was Told I Didn't Want To Send Him There. Boces Does Have A Program In An Island Trees Building, But It Isn't An Island Trees Program.
