I agree ; ask questions and then ask them again. My older son was getting services as a preschooler. However I felt that an intergrated program would be better for him. The school board said no. They also said no to summer speech therapy. Hoewver, the second year ; they said yes to summer speech and also to an integrated program. I often regret not pushing harder for what I believed in. That integrated program at Alternatives changed his life and was wonderful.

Pat/Med ; not on my list. From my experience with them, you need to beg.
Good luck

Half Hollow is excellent in what they offer, they really do want to help the children. The reason they likely do not accept children from other districts is because they have so many IN district to deal with!
You will want to look for a district that offers summer services and Half Hollow does. If the child is more severe, they have a 6 week summer program and a 4 week program for the less severely disabled children.
Depending where you live, BOCES is another option. My experience with them is limited, but good so far. For Half Hollow, your child needs to be pretty severe or require services that HHH just cannot provide.

South Huntington feeback
I reside in the South Huntington district and at first I thought that the services were very good-no problems getting what my son needed. As time has gone on and I have learned more about what my son needs, I have found myself arguing at his IEP meetings. Things are getting even worse this year, as there is a lot of pressure to cut back on services and it is turning into a fight-so I would rate South Huntington's special ed services as fair to good-but only if you speak up and fight for what your child needs!

my husband and I had thought about moving out east I called Rocky Point and Miller Place. I was able to speak to someone in the special ed department and they told me all the services that they offered. I don't remember what they offered but I know is was alot. I also called Shoreham Wading river district. When I called they were very helpful.

new hyde park & garden city districts for special education
Can anyone let me know, if new hyde park and garden city are good school districts for kids with autism? I have a turning 5 son with pdd-nos and we are looking to move from brooklyn to long island. Please share your experience and any info would be very helpful. In brooklyn, in a 6-1-1 class, there are only children with autism, but in a class of 12-1-1 there are other classifications, is that the same way in long island? How do i find out if the school has several 12-1-1 or 6-1-1 classes, which one of these is the highest functioning or appropriate class for my son? If he is placed into anyone of these when he goes in sept of this year, will the teachers make that decision after seeing him for a few months to see how he does in that particular class? thank everyone.
