Alternatives for Children is an excellent place. My son only went there for 6 months but the change in him was unbelievable. When he was evualated by them at age 3, the recommended he go there ; Pat/Med school board declined it and we had inhome therapies for 2 years. Eventually I begged for them to approve him going there.
I often regret not fighting more for him but I was new to the process and didnt know. Its amazing how school boards can recommend things for these children without ever meeting them. d |

don't have time to write everything now, but in my experience with my son Port Jefferson School district which consistently makes national lists as a top district gets a big fat ZERO from me for special ed, the program didn't even exsist when my child attended & needed testing.
Connetquot gets a nine on the elem level & a six at the higher levels. They were awesome when my son was young, I'm sure he would not have graduated high school had we stayed in Port jeff. I'll try to write more later. |

Please--remember even if your kid is 'special ed' children grow up and people mature (a lot of this is maturity) at different levels. Some people are mediocre or less until they hit high school or college or in their 30s or 40s! I'm in Vermont now and the IEP for my son is amazing...they want to DO EVERYTHING for him. I don't know whether he is 'really in trouble' or it's just their policy. However, no matter what, it is still a little upsetting when your kid is 'labeled' and needs help. |

What's worse is that because of certain labels districts dont want to "waste money" on the kids since they will never be a rocket scientist much less live outside of a home setting. It is so mind blowing what is going on is Sachem right now. The regular kids can barely read forget about the special ed kids. Push them all through seems to be the philosophy. I just hope this thread will provide the info much parents need to decide the best district. Had I known then what I do now I would not have moved here.
