Best Long Island School Districts for Special Education (Islip, Babylon: lawyer, zoned)

where is he to go? I don't know of any districts that can help the typical children understand how to work along with special ed kids. Unless I'm wrong PLEASE someone enlighten me!! My son also has social delays and with the added pressure and teasing these kids are gonna do to him will set him back further I feel.

Pjandamom, you are absolutely right my 9 year old daughter goes to a small daycare after school and she told me her best friend is 3 years old I'm not surprised because she relates best to younger childrenbecause of the social delay as well.

My cousin has two children with Autism they are in the Lindenhurst district if this helps

can anyone tell me about Levittown? I heard they have a good spec. ed program too.

I'm in Levittown and from what I understand they are very accomodating to children with special needs. My son's getting Speech and OT, but I think districts in general are easier with the early stuff. I do know a couple of people who have children with greater needs (on the Autism spectrum) and they are very happy. Also a friend of mine's daughter has severe (really severe) asthma and had a horrible time this fall, and they bent over backwards to help them out, school nurse, teachers on up. Slightly different situation, but still a special need.

SEPTA is very strong.

I believe that the kids with greater needs are sent to one of two schools (Summit Lane or Northside). That would be something to investigate. I guess they have more self-contained classrooms there.

My mom is a teacher @ a Nassau BOCES school and I myself have subbed there quite a few times as well as worked in the summer program. I have heard & experienced good things about it. The classes are small and usually each class has 3 or 4 aides in addition to the actual classroom teacher. Obviously since the aides are not certified to teach, they don't, but they are there to help out & assist in all situations. Children are booked into classes based on their ages and teachers the first day of school are given a profile about the child so he/she knows what diagnosis the kid has and what goals the student hopes to achieve. I think it's a really great program...the staff seems great and really care about the kids. Also another great thing is that the schools bus the kids in from everywhere so no matter how far or how close you live to the school there is always a bus available for them. I think which school you send the kid to depends on the age and the diagnosis. Some schools are solely for blind/deaf kids while others have a mix of students with LD's or physical handicaps etc. etc.
