I would think you can find a home in parts of Syosset for that price in this market. There are 31 listings under $500 on MLS right now for Syosset SD. I would imagine that even some of the homes priced up to $550 are overpriced and will drop as well, and could come close to your budget.
We built up on something very similar to this... the typical narrow galley kitchen is now afforded more space since they moved the stairs going to the basement. We opened up the wall on the other side of the kitchen and have a large island there instead. You could also do an extension out the back. It's got great potential and that's always a good thing when you go to sell even if you do nothing to it yourself. Looks like both neighbors have built up already.
i know it, it needs a lot of work, it's like 3 blocks from my house but for the neighborhood and the lot size, it could be well worth it. there is a real beauty going on the market across the street from there but price may be a good deal over Op's budget.

It's not THAT bad. Remember the three rules.. location.. location.. location. I don't think the kitchen and bath would take too much $$$ to update. With the lot size, there's room for expansion at a later date still leaving a good-sized yard. The carport can be enclosed.
Walk to GH Elem, train and library. Waldbaum's is a hop, skip and jump.
Did you see that short sale up on Orchard when you were looking?
^yes, did see it. We specifically wanted to be in the promenade though so we only really considered houses there (well, sea cliff too, but that didn't work out)
btw, waldbaums there is the worst grocery store ever. i usually go to north shore farms or stop n shop in glen cove
You can definitely find something in Plainview for that price. I used to live in Plainview and I miss it so much, it's a great hamlet and the schools are very good.
These are a few of my favorites in your price range that are for sale in Plainview right now:

lombardi is clean inside and has a large property, northern pkwy is decent but needs to lower their price... a few of the others are on bigger roads you may want to stay away from - been there, wouldn't do it again.
Check out East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Oceanside, Bellmore, Merrick, N. Bellmore, N.Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford Massapequa, N. Massapequa or Bethpage. These would all work, unless you're set on the north shore. If you're set on staying north, Locust Valley/Bayville. This one seems like a good value.
