Talking with the gas station attendants, they agree 100% it's not a safe place. They have been robbed a few times already. The trailer homes surrounding the gas stations do not help either. If you don't believe me, stop by there at night and you will see for yourself. I have seen the condos by the fire house but I am not sure about them. I am all over New York, I have friends who own businesses in Jamaica Queens and I feel safer in Jamaica Queens, in the industrial area tha I do on Route 110 (North Amityville) at night. What I am saying has nothing to do with race, it's a lower income area where the trailer parks are. I have seen both blacks and whites there walking around, all shady. Anthony |

It depends where in "North Amityville" you're talking about. Like the other poster said, those condos on Sunrise near South Oaks is a nice area (near the Sunrise Mall). However, those are for Senior Citizens.
Driving up Route 110 will NOT give you feel of the neighborhood. I think you should drive through the area you're considering buying in. Drive on your block and the surrounding areas to see what it's like. Go there during the week in the daytime and at night (after 8pm) and also on weekend days and nights after 9pm (especially Friday/Saturday). There are parts of "North Amityville" that are "OK" and other parts that are crappy and disgusting. Oh, and if you have kids, you'll probably want to send them to a private school because the Amityville schools aren't that great. |

As Smash255 points out, "That area is actually Amityville ... " For those who may not be familiar with Amityville: Amityville is a village (incorporated in 1894) in the southwest part of the Town of Babylon, in the southwest part of Suffolk County (along the Babylon/Oyster Bay town line and the Suffolk/Nassau County line). Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Amityville in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Amityville; on the east by the Hamlet of Copiague; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of East Massapequa in the town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County (the Babylon/Oyster Bay town line and the Suffolk/Nassau County line). Amityville is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village: places that have an "Amityville, NY 11701" mailing address that are not in the Village of Amityville are in the Hamlet of Copiague and the Hamlet of North Amityville in the Town of Babylon and in the Hamlet of East Massapequa in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County. ![]() For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource |

To compare N Amityville and Jamacia, Queens is crazy. N Amityville can be crappy, but I don't feel unsafe stopping for gas for christsakes. But - I totally agree on the school situation. The HS is thugged out (I say this not in a racist manner at all, thuggish white/black/hispanic kids are ALWAYS all around the front of the HS and the 7/11), if I had kids, I wouldn't send them there. |

Good point, there's no reason to feel unsafe around shady people.

There are shady people everywhere. I've never felt like I'm going to get raped/mugged/murdered/assaulted, lets up it that way.
Then again, I don't walk down the main drag with my purse wide open looking around wide eyed or anything. To someone w/ no street smarts, maybe they would have a different opinion of the area. Stopping for gas or at a convienience store on 110 has never scared me, and I do it all the time. For LI, I guess you could consider N Amityville crappy, but as compared to real ghettos? I'd rather drive through N Amityville that ENY or Bed-Stuy. |
