I'm not saying you are not street smart. I'm saying, personally, I don't feel unsafe on 110 stopping to get gas or food or whatever. Would I live there? Probably not. Would I live in a nice Condo complex w/ a N. Amityville address? Probably, after checking it out at various hours of the day.
But, what I'm saying is, even the report you have posted up there, compared to say, even Williamsburg, a gentrified area of Brooklyn, is not really even horrible, and par for the course in many suburban areas. Unfortunately there is gang activity sprouting up everywhere. I'm guessing a lot of that bad activity comes out of the trailer park and some of the project-like housing, and is gang on gang crime.
Just stating my personal opinion, since I live near the area and travel up 110 at various hours of day and night on a regular basis.

Stopping for gas at night is one thing... would you feel safe walking at night by yourself up Route 110 or on any of those side streets? I know I wouldn't. As a matter of fact, I would feel safer in Jamaica, Queens than I would in that part of Amityville. I am originally from the city and I would feel 100% safer walking alone in the city at night than I would feel in a few parts of Long Island.

Those "Police Blotters" mean zip. They're inaccurate with respect to what's actually happening. You may be surprised to know that the police UNDER-report crime and minimize what they write on reports if they take a report at all.
SCPD officers are paid VERY high salaries.... could you imagine the outrage if the public knew how much crime was actually happening!?!?!!? So, intead, they under-report, under-charge, and basically pull the wool over the public's eyes to make it look like their "tough on crime" initiatives are actually working or that their police are actually DOING something other than sitting in their squad cars scratching their butts!

I judge a neigborhood like this.... As a woman, can I walk down the street at night, alone, with my purse or bag and not have to worry about being robbed, mugged, assaulted, raped, harassed, or otherwise violated.
If the answer is yes, then it's a decent area.
If the answer is no, then it's not.
As for "North Amityville"... the answer is a huge, resounding NO!

I take it you've never been to South Jamacia then. And if you have, you don't know what you're talking about

That all depends on who you are....are you a black woman? I doubt you'd feel the same way if you were. Let North Amityville be defined by it's surroundings and I guess it is Compton, take it for what it is on it's own and it's fundamentally the same place as Levittown. It's majority first time home owners and families, just a lower income bracket. There is obviously crime, but these are not people who are caught up in the hopelessness of generational poverty that real ghettos suffer from. No one there is living the hood life, just some kids and wayward souls who get mixed up in shady business and get a little too deep in to ever come back out. The schools being as bad as they are don't help anything one bit.
I agree I wouldn't walk around there at night because I'm white and I'd be a target for the few miscreants that are giving North Amityville a bad name....there's plenty of places a black man walking around at 3AM is a target and likely to get himself screwed up too, does that make Howard Beach a bad place to live?
