Ok, I've searched the forums and basically read that Amityville, especially North Amityville, is bad. I guess I just wanted to post in the hopes that I would get some different insight than what I've already read LOL (silly I know!). I am co-op/condo hunting and did look at a unit in N. Amityville, just north of Sunrise Hwy. I fell in love with the unit itself and the complex grounds are nice, but I am nervous about the area since it has such a bad reputation. I didn't drive around the area extensively - just up and down a few streets. Some of the houses were quite nice, but some were very run down. I am female and would be living there alone. Should I totally rule it out? I just want to feel comfortable and be safe. Any advice or input would be appreciated!

If you're talking about those new condos that are literally just north of Sunrise on the old South Oaks grounds, I wouldn't be the slightest bit worried. I'm also pretty sure you are because I can't think of any others in the area.
People on here will tell you it's awful because it has the highest percentage of blacks on Long Island, the schools aren't great and it's poorer than the surrounding areas. Anytime I've been there I've noticed it's mostly average looking families, I didn't get the impression that it's unsafe, although there are definitely some shady looking areas. If it's the condos I think you're talking about I wouldn't even think twice about it, but if it's somewhere else I'd feel it out a little more before you make a decision. |

I drive up 110 through N Amityville all the time. While it's not the greatest area, I wouldn't fear for my life or anything up there. I wouldn't want to live up there necessarily, but if it was a new condo complex, I would consider it. I'd say your biggest concern would be property crime.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. I think I may just keep looking for now, since I keep hearing/reading that prices will continue to drop. Plus this place needs a bit of work, so it's another reason for me to hold off.
Thanks again! |

That area is actually Amityville, west of 110, the Amityville/ N. Amityville border is actually further north than sunrise Highway (West Smith Street). Granted its close to N. Amityville, but not exactly there. I would also say N. amityville gets a bit of a bad rep. Its far from the greatest area, and has problems, but its not as bad as some make it out to be. Also the part of n Amityville you would be near really isn't bad at all. The rougher areas of N. Amityville are generally a bit east of rt 110 around Albany Ave.

It's not the greatest area, but it's far from the worst. I agree when others say it gets a bad rep.

It is ridiculous to compare Amityville to Compton.
