Think big Islanders, Nationhood or Bust!
Independence wouldent work, neither would "sovereignty association".

A state of the union is a sovereign nation of it's own anyways.

Pish, Pish. Go big or go home! Think about it, as it's own country it could deport people, declare war, join the Eurozone, make everyone on the Island a diplomat so they could party in NYC like it's 1999 and not have worry about arrest, have a cool flag, buy an aircraft carrier, drive on the other side of the road, make up it's own language and even print it's own currency with the faces of famous Long Islanders on it like Dee Snider, Peppi Marcello and Peter Lemongello. You can't do any of that as a state.

There really isn't a downside.

No downside? Who is going to cut the lawn, clean the houses, watch the kids and wear down the pavement on the street corners before 7 a.m. if they can deport people?! Whole towns and sections of other towns will be left desolate!

You see desolation, I see duck and potato farms! As it's own country Islandia could outlaw married women from working full time thus solving the house keeper/babysitter/lawn care issues with one stroke of the pen! Also one car per family.

Long Island's future is in it's past and only as it's own country can the Island pass sensible laws to get it there.

Hail Islandia!

Nobody is going to want to give up US citizenship.

What about defense?

Do we become a republic with an elected president, or an appointed president? Do we become a monarchy? Who becomes monarch? An indigenous monarchy? Or do we become a Commonwealth Realm like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc?

Most importantly, how would we get revenue? What would our currency be?

Too complicated. Too many variables. We should instead seek the highest level of autonomy within the United States - statehood.

I actually think we need less states, not more. States act like little countries and change their laws to compete against other states for labor, wages, etc. Not exactly the best way to compete globally.

Who is going to invade the Island, a bunch of pampered rich guys from the city during the summer? Defense would mostly be a way to get free money from the US or China. Islandia could also control access to the Sound. And don't forget Islandia could also block it's air space from air traffic going to JFK and Laguardia, which would allow many residents to get some sleep.

Islandia could keep most of it's present government as it works pretty darn well as it is but just add a president to coordinate services between the counties, which could become separate states of Islandia. It'd probably be best to have him selected by some high level folks in both government and business in each county to get the ball rolling, but switching over to an elected president within 10 years or so.

For revenue Islandia could revive it's defense industry, which would also solve the problem of what to do with Calverton. Also agriculture could make a come back with wines, potatoes, fish and even ducks being sold to it's larger neighbor to the West. With it's well educated, native English speaking work force it could even be a major off shoring player.

While it might sound complicated to mainlanders It's really no challenge to an Islander as the they manage perfectly well with multiple school districts and levels of local government.

If needed more territory they could easily annex Brooklyn and Queens as historically, ethnically and geographically part of Islandia.

Long Island needs to make some big moves and separation from the mainland would be a start.

I could slip into the USA illegally and qualify for handouts from all the taxpayers!

If this were to happen then I feel bad for all of the SUNY students on the island since they will probably lose their in-state tuition.
