Please only locals lets discuss. What is your take on the mission that drops off stuff for the homeless at 112 and Hallock every Thursday? I drove past it last week and could not believe how many people were lined up there. I think its keeping and attracting more homeless to the area, and I think it should stop.

I live reasonably close and am through there quite often, but never on a Thursday during a drop off. What time of day does this occur? You've piqued my curiosity. What mission is this?

My questions would be:
When did this start?
Why was this location given the green light by the Town?
Has there been an increase in homeless in the village since the start of the mission drop off?

It is around noon-1pm ish time. It has been going on for quite a while, not exactly sure how long though. It used to be in the Post Office lot till the owners threw them out of there. I understand they are trying to do good, but it is certainly NOT helping out the area whatsoever.

Heaven forbid people in need are helped.

WHere is people's humanity!!!!!?????!!!!!!

Okay, I get it, you dont like it in your area because you are afraid more and more homeless people are going to be in the area, leading to crime, decreased home values, difficulties in selling your house, adding to the blight of the area, etc.....I understand. BUT, where are people's sense of helping those less fortunate and being more tolerant towards those people? I am so sickened by people these days.

Have them come to your street corner and give this stuff out if you are so sickened by me and others. Call them up now and tell them. Yeah, didn't think you would! It's a HUGE problem in this area that gets worse by the day.

Have you considered going down there and volunteering to help since it is so close?

Thank you for sharing the link.

They set up shop in the Park and Ride lot; what happens if/when one of their volunteers or beneficiaries falls and injures himself in the lot? Are they going to turn around and sue NYS, the Town of Brookhaven, and Suffolk County for allowing them to distribute items there? Years ago, I donated my first baby's items -- clothes, high chairs, etc. -- to Birthright. Second time around I went to donate my youngest's high chair and Birthright told me they could no longer take anything like that. Turns out a recipient had taken a high chair, placed the child in it, child fell out, recipient sued Birthright.

While the Church's heart is in the right place, their distribution location is not. Let them take it to a local church. The mission has a FB page which shows photos and videos. One photo shows them distributing food in a Home Depot parking lot. A video (shot elsewhere) showed scores of 'immigrants' lined up receiving food and clothing. Seems the Reverend in charge likes to speak before groups at churches in wealthier areas. He's smart enough to keep his recipients just out of their range of view, lest he upset them and donations decline.

Oh and by the way, Mr. Knowitall, I live in Centereach. There are a few homeless people around. There was even a story about them in Newsday. Do you know what the story was about? It was about how store owners and residents in the area do things to help them out. Residents bring them food and drink and sometimes money to go buy food. Stores actually let them sleep in the store on very cold nights. We are not scared of them or disguted by them, we actually try to help them...WITHOUT COMPLAINT!!!!!

You, on the other hand, are put off that they are getting help in your town. What kind of human being are you????? I can answer that. You are selfish, spoiled and self centered without a thread of decency in your soul. To come onto a public forum and complain that homeless people are receiving much needed help is quite a testament to you. Kudos to you sir!!!!!!

Sunday: St James RC Church soup kitchen volunteer. And you? I would wager a few Thursday regulars are Sunday regulars at St James.

I guess the homeless in Centereach are a better class of homeless then, because there are a lot of them here, and a lot of them that are dangerous. I do my share of helping charities, but I also work 2 jobs to support my family so I really don't have much of anything in the way of free time. So before you go and accuse someone of the kind of human being they are maybe you should ask for some facts first. There are plenty of jobs out there to be had if you look hard enough, which is what these folks should be doing. If you are so kind and good hearted why don't you come over and take some of these folks in? Be like the wonderful businesses in your area.
