I've heard that rates of cancer and illness are much higher there than other parts of LI. I only know 5 people from the town, and four of them have developed cancer..one my friend's mother had brain cancer. Where can I find indepth info related to the crap that the Northport stacks pump out?

I have not heard about cancer clusters in Fort Salonga. However, if there were, it would probably not be the Northport (LIPA) stacks that are the cause. The more likely culprit would be the Smithtown & Huntington town dumps (Huntington's is now a garbage incineration plant) that both border Fort Salonga. But again, I am unaware of any higher incidence of cancer in Fort Salonga then anyplace else.

Your sample set is extremely small to be considered anything more than a joke. Do you really think if 80% of Fort Salonga residents had been diagnosed with cancer, it would be swept under the rug?

What is the source of your info? Is your personal experience with the 5 residents the only information source, or you read/heard from other sources?

The only place you really hear with high clusters is Shelter Island and that is probably due to its proximity to Plum Island.

The spelling police, how origional. As for Fort Salonga, I've heard that it has the highest levels of radon in the soil on the Island. I don't know why though!

Although I love Fort Salonga, we passed on buying a home there due to the proximity to the landfills located just South of FS. I couldn't see paying $$$ to live so close to the landfills. I also googled and found various things about leakage into the soil, etc.

Thanks glad2. I also (Thanks to crooks mentioning it) checked out a little section of online homes for sale just east of Fort Salonga caleed San Remo? Did you look there as well? Was that affected by the leakage into the soil and landfill proximity? THanks..
