EXTREME commuting how nuts is your commute? I may know how to make it better (Hicksville: how much, transfer)

Dude you HAVE to take some steps to move yourself or mve where you work! There must be some way to change things.
Yes, I definitely need to make some changes and best move appears to be relocation.
Over time things change and for my profession, NYC is no longer the center of the universe. These days I can spin the 'wheel and find more opportunity in just about any other city. Couple that with some of the highest property taxes in the nation, obscene utility rates, a cost of living heading to the moon, worsening traffic congestion, crumbling roads and a mass transit system that provides lousy service at champagne fares, and I start to wonder why why anyone wants to live on Long Island.
On this forum, most folks seem to enjoy living in close proximity to family and everyone loves the beaches, both fine reasons. But, having grown up on LI as well, it would seem like LI's best days are way in the past and the politicians are only hastening this.
To the folks who have helpfully suggested finding opportunity here on LI, there is very little opportunity. Most of the large employers know and exploit this to their advantage, making quality of life in a local job rather crappy. Frankly, most of the large employers have left LI for the same reasons I list above and those that remain enjoy major tax abatements and utility rate discounts that we, the taxpayers, pay for.
I would be loooong gone if I had to commute longer than an hour to work. Just not worth it. My time is to valuable and no money can buy it.
With regard to my commute, I'm like a prisoner doing time. I have a year and a half left, and then my only commute will be down the driveway to get my newspaper. A year and half later, my youngest graduates HS and then adios LI.
6 minute drive to train station. I have a 50ish minute train to (1) penn (I walk upstairs to my office in less than 5 minutes). Never sit next to anyone most days, it is great, except when there are "switch problems". Taking the train 5 days a week is draining no doubt, but the LIRR is not as horrible as most make it out to be - not perfect either.
My first job in NYC was downtown (hours were 8-630). Left the house at 6:20 am and didn't get home until just after 8 pm. long day and long commute . I'm no longer working in the city

LIRR is as horrible as they say! Yes, if you get on from a major hub, say Port Washington, Hicksville or Mineola, the number of rush hour trains is plentiful and the ride is brief enough. However, most of the outlying areas are left with much more skimpy schedules with poor performance records. On top of that, the fare from my zone to Penn is now up to $345/mo, a ridiculous sum of money when considering the quality of service.
I have the pleasure of taking the LIRR to Manhattan. 4 HOURS a day, assuming the train and subway are running on time (and you know what that means if you know the MTA). Made the decision to live here in 1998 and have lived to regret it every day.
This is no way to live.
Same here...I don't mind it that much...sleep in morn, good role smartphone on the way home. It can suck, but I love my job, and working in the city is awesome!
I envy you...mine is 23'! But it's 30' from the coffee maker to the refrigerator for creamer.
My former commute was Levittown to Great Neck...not horrible once I discovered the LIE service road....unless it rained heavily and flooding occurred (once took 3hrs to work).
122 miles round trip- hour and fifteen minutes in the morning and up to two and a half hours home. You do what you have to do.
from where to where I know transit very well in LI there might be a bus to Lirr there.

Well which part of LI does she leave from which part of brooklyn? LIRR also has frequent service to brooklyn

The problem is that i work on the north shore of long island in huntington off of main street. I cannot take public transportation even if I wanted to. Most transportation on long island is east to west focused not north to south.
Not exactly where is your origin? If you are close to rte 110 you do have a bus called S1 and unlike most suffolk buses its more frequent than most suffolk lines and is a straight shot to huntington it does go by main street too.
