I wanted to add that there are many nice neighborhoods north of Montauk in Sayville. Mill Pond/ Astor Drive/Sunrise Drive is our area of town. There are also nice developments off of Lincoln Ave and Johnson Ave.
Anywhere can have a snoot factor -- as long as one person has a bigger house, nicer car, nicer clothes.
Not all of Stony Brook is snooty. There are some pockets -- I will give you that much.
I only made the comparison because someone else said SB was snooty. The snobbery in Mt. Sinai is completely based on materialism, ie "I've got the bigger sunglasses and Range Rover", where as in SB at least you have some semblance of the intelligencia driving the uplifted noses.
East setauket/setauket - the areas I have been to seem so pretty and it has nice countryside feel to it. Which are the better areas to look in?
Stony brook - I realize it's upper middle class but i have heard its also quite pretentious?
Other areas we have considered are st James, Smithtown and nesconset but we have little to no knowledge of these towns...i didn't grow up here!
Setauket (including Old Field, Poquott, and Strongs Neck) is far more pretentious than Stony Brook.
Quick anecdote: 17 years ago when house hunting, I told the realtor that I was interested in the Three Village area. She kept showing me homes in Setauket and I asked to see homes in Stony Brook. She asked me why and stated that Setauket was much nicer. I explained to her that my husband grew up there and we wish to return to the area. I'm in the older area north of 25A and most of my neighbors are university people with a couple of doctors, policemen, and tradesmen mixed in. We are anything BUT pretentious.
I think you might find the same scenarios play out in St James and Smithtown depending upon where you are in town.

Seriously, though, I believe there are snoots all over. Even in North Massapequa (the lesser Massapequa according to my Pequan compadres) there were people who felt they were better because of the car they drove, new kitchen, new landscaping, etc. I don't believe it can be completely avoided, but one can try to purchase where it is dialed down a notch or two.

As for the Miller Place/Mt Sinai choice, my votes with MP.

Crooks
There are a couple of snoots in the S section -- they're part of the south N25A Mount Sinai tribe -- but overall, things are mellower in the alphabet areas.
Sayville has a snoot factor not that far off from Stony Brook. Both great areas if you can deal with that.
Most people in Sayville are not snoots. Are there any? Sure! But no more than anywhere else. A few snooty people does not make the whole neighborhood that way, and most people here are nice. There is enough of a selection of people to choose from and make friends with, if you are not snobby and want friends who are not snobby.
I have found that more often than not, the snobs are not necessarily the wealthiest. For example, here in Sayville my experience has been that the ONLY snobs I have encountered is a small clique of moms who graduated from Sayville HS together and act like they are still in HS. We are talking about 5 or 6 people. And I have 5 kids across multiple grades, so I can tell you honestly that this is a very select few and they really do not have to affect your life.
